A 'Hunting sling-shot' modd with HD double bands and a 1" steel ball held in pouch with a small rubber band, keeps it loaded.Very nasty up close and above the shoulders. With a flip up support will shoot an arrow as well as a bow.

To me a firearm is just another tool that hurls a projectile like throwing a stick, the frying pan, the laptop, a rock, a spear, various sprays. Some people kneejerk around firearms and that's understandable if they are unfamiliar with them, or have the mindset that everyone that possesses one is an automatic criminal.

What's there to be afraid of in the US ? Mostly in certain locales and situations it's human predators, often drunk, on meth, etc. Secondly certain animal predators.

What's the odds of something happening ? Comparatively low but it does happen to others every year on occasion. But as a few others have already mentioned, under certain circumstances it's insurance against being compromised no matter the odds.

Have I ever had to actually use ? No, but in several instances I had to show I was armed to quickly defuse situations that could have gone bad for me.

The US NPS finally thought outside the box and made it legal to carry firearms into parks. The idea being predatory humans will be more cautious there knowing everyone else may be packing. Reports back to me are the number of incidents have dropped dramatically as a result.

The bottom line though is everyone has a different comfort zone and also may use different camping styles. When I go to group campouts it's the frying pan. If I go to remote locations or places near larger urban areas I sleep better at night knowing I can handle whatever.

I stop bathing. After three days in the woods, NOTHING comes into camp (but the flies)!

Tried that once a long time ago, couldn't stand myself either.Wasn't to ward off predators, no available water(in winter) for a bath.

Legally carrying a conceled gun does not make you violent. Statistically CCW permit holders are the most law abiding non violent citizens. We rank lower in crime stats than police officers and teachers..

Come camp with us - you'll be fine

Self defense with a knife or a bat? against multiple attackers? a gun in a combination lock safe? a gun loaded with non-lethal snakeshot? using a weapon as a deterrent?

maybe start by reading a book,
I recommend Shooting for Keeps by Massad Ayoob

357 Magnum is a good caliber for personal protection, including from Bear and Cougar ... The Ruger SP 101 with crimson trace laser comes to mind.

Or the lighter LCR, also in 357 magnum, with laser

Yes, I know several Vanagon drivers that carry a hand gun. They travel in remote areas, are properly trained and licensed, and take personal responsibility for their survival.

Why does being armed automatically make you violent? You meet some of the nicest people at the gun range. Laughing

I've always wondered how anti-gun people would feel about people carrying guns if their life or the life of a loved one was saved by a law abiding, gun carrying "sheepdog". Would they be a hypocrite and say, "it was OK for this person to be carrying a gun in this particular case", or would they be true to their beliefs and say, "why on earth do you feel the need to carry a gun?"

We do a lot of camping in the boonies(no 911 for miles). You've got to remember, not everyone in the woods is a tree-hugging hippie. Some of the scariest criminals have been caught out in the woods.

So yeah, I'm a firm believer in our second amendment rights.

And its just that.. an "idea"

Crime rates in National Parks were already very low, relative.
I'd never take away your "constitutional right" to bear arms... but could you guys at least have an honest discussion about guns and thier effects on violent crime?

The vast majority of violent crime in this country is among acquaintances and family... Is the average permitted gun owner gonna pull thier weapon on a family member?

Having been exposed to the alcohol and meth fueled derelict crowd all too much.., they don't typically stop in thier hazed, crazed state to consider whether that lump in your coat is a gun.

Whatever floats your boat, gentlemen.. but the gun stats and "reports" that are published by gun advocates are as slanted as a pachinco machine.

One of my favorites is the story floated about how Japanese abandoned ideas of invading the US mainland in WWII because they thought the civilians were too well armed. Laughing

All the frickin hand guns and huntin' rifles couldn't have slowed a Pearl Harbor like attack.

What is the saying?
The paranoids are out to get me!

Now.. How about them Vanagons? Them's some sexy machines, eh?

First off, Awesome thread!
I like a machete. Its multi use so your mind always knows where it is and you will use for various tasks. Thus giving you practice with it. Everyone will consider it a tool vs. a weapon. Its large enough to where you can say thats not a knife THATS A KNIFE.

I think this is a great subject and I am not surprised VW VAN owners prepared.
I believe most in this community are about self reliance. If you consider it, it would be pretty foolish not to have something. We can put ourselves in remote locations or a varity of situations with our loved ones. Being prepared for those situations doesnt make volient just prepared. Just because I bring some tools doesnt mean Im going to fix my van in the woods. It just gives me an option.

I was addresing the alleged "reports" over a drop in violent crime in National Parks.
1st.. If there has been a drop, the time period is too small a window for that trend to mean anything.
2nd.. As stated, National Parls were ALREADY very safe.

The stats I pay attention to are the stats issued by law enforcement.

Spend some time with any officer and discuss the types of violent crime they see...
Predators are a small, small sliver of violent crime in general.
And predator-type crime is almost zero in National Parks.

I like being a good sheep! I will just let someone else worry about protecting me like...... the government yah that sounds good, they do a bang up job of protecting my rights and spending my tax dollar!I guess the government in the UK has done a good job of criminalizing guns and everything about them, unless its in the hands of someone that works for the government then thats ok. This whole world is just one big community of people that only get along and everybody is in their right mind at all times. If you don't understand something try to learn more about it before making uneducated assumptions about people or ideas. If you start to think twice about group camping trips with other vanagon owners because they might have a gun I guess it worked as a deterrent for you so it might work for someone else who was on the verge of committing a crime or even just thinking about it. I don't know about mind set of an anti gun person because I am not one but if I see a person in need of help( being attacked, robbed etc.) I will step in to help(gun or no gun) because it is the right thing to do. There was a police chief in Raineer Oregon that needed help long before a gun was involved and all of the unarmed bystanders just stood around waiting for someone else to do something about it while the Chief was brutally beaten and then the POS took his gun while he was incapacitated and shot him point blank in the face. I have people in my life that I would risk my life for and I am not going to leave it only to someone else to save them so that is why I have a gun. To the anti gun people I say quit wearing your seat belts because you most likely won't need them, they are just a precaution!

As a gun owner I can honestly say that overly trigger happy gun owners scare me more than the odd crack head (or meth head) looking for a fix. We have a mechanic that we hire during the summer to keep our tractors running that always carries three guns. How do I know? He shows them to any and everybody. Usually followed by a long winded rant about how he dares someone to look at him cross eyed or try to steal a wrench from his truck. This guy scares me not because Im intimidated by him it's because he's a coward and cowards do stupid things when the heat gets turned up. He carries not for self defense but more for compensation if you catch my drift.

If you are contemplating gun ownership get educated. Take a class, read some books. I second reading up on Massad Ayoob, while I don't always agree with this politics still essential reading. Are you going to be able to pull the trigger when the time is right? Will you know legally when the time was right for you to pull the trigger? Are you prepared for the consequences?

Yeah....Vanagons are really cool machines.

As a follow up to my earlier post.. and admittedly these "stats" are second hand and from an NPR article on the National Parks gun rule

Quote:
FBI statistics show that America's national parks are far safer than the rest of the country. For 2006 overall, there were 469 violent crimes per 100,000 people in the U.S. The violent crime rate in national parks was 1.65 per 100,000.

The rule did not allow guns until today (ironic, eh?).. So any possible drop in violent crime below 1.65 per 100,000 BEFORE today is attributable to what exactly? The "idea" that someone may be carrying a gun as of today?

Laughing Laughing
