I'm late to this thread but find it interesting to know that others busses steer sloppy. My wife and I just bought a dc that is all over the road and was told by the previous owner it needed a new steering box. I found this thread by following a link from the NDBS post, so dan.ville thanks for linking it. Now I will try other avenues before I buy a new rebuilt steering box. Off to read the remainder or this thread, only as far as page 11 to date. _________________ When the children get older and want to know where the money went, show them your vacation videos. |

After my driveway alignment, the wheels are straight, and the bus stays on path if you let the steering wheel go on the highway, BUT, the wheel was a little off center. Causes my turn signal to turn off too early on right turns.
I did not really want to redo the whole alignment, since it has been so good, so I detached the drag link with my new ball joint removal tool.
NICE ...........
spin the ball joint twice and reattach. Wheel straight, me happy, and turn signal good to go.... _________________ 67 Standard 11 window How I Keep My Bus Alive

When I got the bus, I took off the pedal pan to work on the steering, and have not put it back on since.
Bout time now:
trying to clean up my garage, so out of the way means back on the bus where it belongs. _________________ 67 Standard 11 window How I Keep My Bus Alive

FOURTH brake light
Went to the junkyard today to get a third brake light from a late model Isuzu Trooper.
Had to use 3M moulding tape to hold it on to the inside of the glass.

Trying to find the solution to my rear wheel play.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=402226
Backing plate off (the weep hole was plugged with gasket sealer)
Using the floor jack to tilt the axle end up so the trans fluid doesn't leak out
Parts to go in
Order of parts as they were removed ( I think the spacer on the right side of the bearing is in backwards.)
Backing plate off

Bearing cap with spacer inside it.
There seems to be a custom
Parts as they were installed, separated.
More new parts

Looks like the part number is 211 501 311 but the middle of it was made larger with a grinder:
Caked up with gunk:
Clearing weep hole with wire.
Type 3 III drums fit into bearing cap after grinding by previous owner

Big spacer compared to spacer in new kit, not the same part:
Spacer parts comparison
I thought one side of this bearing stuck out more than the other.
Turns out the washer was stuck to the bearing
The axle tube end has a small recess (like a slight dish shape). _________________ 67 Standard 11 window How I Keep My Bus Alive

Painted my used drums with hi temp flat black.
The order of axle seal parts on the Type 3 swing axle with new bearing
The EMPI spacer was slightly taller than the one that was in there.
That was the driver's side. The old bearing just came out of the axle tube by just using my hand to take it out.
When I put the new one on, I had to use the drum to press it all the way into the axle tube.
The in/out play that I had on the axle was gone by then.
Passenger side was not so easy.
1) the spacer was hard to come off, so I had to get out my Harbor Freight special.....(I use it much more than I thought I ever would)
Here the sharp edges help split the spacer from the bearing.
Made a custom bearing puller using some leftover project bolts from Home Depot and a grinder (actually a cutoff wheel)
Back to the Harbor Freight special again

Close up of the groove in the bearing cap to accept the large o-ring from the axle seal kit
A clean assembly photo of the bearing cap, seal, spacer, o-ring located in the groove, and high tack gasket sealer to try and keep it dry...
Put some high tack sealer on the backing plate too.

Few days of driving after the axle seal job.
I installed the driver's side large o-ring in the space between the backing plate and the bearing

Large O-ring, hard to see on the early ones, they sit right in the backing plate space.
