So I'm in the process of replacing my leaky washer fluid reservoir with one I yanked off a junker van from the yard. I'm trying to clean up the replacement tank before I throw it on. Does anyone know if there was some sort of factory-installed protectant/liner applied to the bottom-side of the tank, or is this black/brown caked on stuff just 20+ years of road grime?

I'm thinking of doing a spray-on bedliner to the bottom of the tank to protect it from the inevitable rock.

is that the front washer tank you're talking about?

If so, then the brown/tan gunk is the wax based factory schmutz.

Yeah, sorry - front tank. I'll keep attacking the gunk.

I cleaned one all up. That stuff is not road gunk, it's something else and it's not easy to get off. I can't remember what I used to get it off. Maybe a super stiff scrub brush, boiling hot water, and Dawn dish soap?

Thank you,

David

Cool, I've got mine alternating between engine degreaser and simple green. My wife's gonna love the smell of our laundry room when I'm done with this. Smile

All that gunk will protect your tank better from road debris. Laughing

Now if you wanted a bigger washer tank with two pumps... I've got a few.
Used in Vanagons with headlight washers.

What a great idea! That looks like the extra large tank for T3's with headlight washers since it drops lower than the regular washer tanks.

I have smashed my spare tire clam shell, driveshaft skid rails and engine/tranny skid plates and my washer fluid tank has never made contact. I dropped it recently to clear out some gunk at the bottom that kept getting sucked up and clogging the washer nozzles and I looked it over well for damage.
With the lower hanging headlight washer bottle the guard looks like a nice upgrade. I would ad a plate in the front to box it out though to protect it from impact in addition to scraping.

I have a stock NA spec washer bottle like the OP probably has- unless his junkyard is stocked with euro spec vans. I though of converting but the squirters are ugly and I didn't like the lower slung bottle.
U are more pimpy that I am. But I drive mine.
