|
|
| I have just bought a 1956 Oval window Beetle but is has a bad aftermarket air filter on it. The engine is not original as its a 1500 but I want to make the engine as stock as possible. What Oil Bath Air Filter inparticular should I be looking for to suit that engine? Anyone got any pics of what the filter should look like so I can go about sourcing the exact one? |

I'm assuming this is the right one then, does it have a specific name? Also do the arms that come out of either side of the arm have a name? (The ones the foil hoses are connected to)

You should be able to get a 40 HP air cleaner in there, but not a post-1966 air cleaner if you are going to use the pre-1967 engine lid. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

If your 1500 is a 1967 style then the air cleaner you want should be like the one pictured. I am fairly sure that later 1500's had different looking Pre-heat hoses than the '67. Those 'arms' are just the air instakes. I suppose you could call them snorkels? They were added to let the bigger 1500 breath better I guess. If you have a 28 PICT-1 or so carb, you could get away with the earlier 40 hp style air cleaner which is smaller and has only one snorkel on the left side. The motor might not breath as well but the 40 hp air cleaner would fit under your deck lid (assuming you have the original decklid?). As was stated earlier, 1967 and later cars have a big 'hump' in the back of the engine lid to fit the big air cleaner. This is probably why your car had it replaced with a smaller aftermarket one. _________________ 1964 Type 1

| I don't think that will clear the oval decklid. I use one from a '66 1300. It breathes better than one from a 1200 but still clears the decklid. |

Here is a 66 Bug air cleaner. It has a single snorkel which points left, small heat riser tube connection, and you can tell it from a 40hp on the outside from the shape of the snorkel, it starts out straight, then flares wider where it connects to the base, 40hp has more gradual and straight taper to the snorkel.

I think I read your question a little bit differently than did the others. The group is usually more correct so I will ask for a little clarification... Did you want the engine to look stock for an oval era engine or did you want the engine look correct for the engine? If you want the stock oval look then look at the 36hp pics. If you want the correct look for the engine you have, I think you are covered by the above responses. |

| I don't think a 36hp air cleaner will breathe as well on a 1500. I'd advise finding the '66 cleaner pictured above. It will still look very stockish in the '56 compartment. |

Agreed. Just for the record, here is what a 40HP one looks like. I think the '66 is the best one for a 1500 in an oval because the snorkel seems to be a bit bigger than the 40hp but would still fit under the lid.
I suppose all of this makes we want to ask the question:
Do you have the correct 1500 tin in your car? I know a 36hp engine is about 3/4" narrower than the later engines. Was the 1500 tin modified (cut) to let the engine fit? The reason I ask is a 36hp tin wouldn't have the pre heat hose hole in it. If you go with the '66 air cleaner you will need to find a way run the preheat hose (and the matching little stove pipe piece that goes with it).
Cheers! _________________ 1964 Type 1

Is this the 113 129 613 Q air cleaner you have??
Looks like a 1966 AC, but has the post-1967 AC preheat tube. That should work fine and better than a 1966 with your 1600 due to the larger later preheat tube. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

| I've had a look at the engine today and I have a Solex 30 Pict-2 carb so I need an air filter that will sit sweetly on that, fit under my stock Oval decklid without vents whilst at the same time not starve my 1500 engine. I don't want to compromise performance. What do you guys think I should go for then? |

| No, it was one i was looking at purchasing but I wanted to confirm it was the best one before buying so haven't gone for it as of yet...why, what are you think? Is it the best to go for or is it rather small for the engine as I don't want to compromise performance. |

That would be the best for fit and performance with what you have.
If you really are more interested in performance, you need to put a lot more $$$ and dual carbs on a rebuilt engine. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

This is the one I use, from a '66 Beetle. It works perfect.
