my speedo cable was broken when i got the car bought one from ghia parts it broke going down the road. ordered another one it lasted two days then broke again. could it be the speedometer. its stamped on the back that it was rebuilt in 87. also the cable seem to be waaaay to long i routed what appeared to be right way but it seemed way to long. it had a huge curve it in which i think may have led to its breaking but not sure. i figured the cable should run with a slight curve from the speedo to the hole in the fire wall and out to the wheel with enough room to flex when the wheel is turned. is there another company that sells cables to fit the type three.

I'd run a good used cable that I Knew was the correct length! It won't last either if your speedometer is froze up.

Make sure your speedo spins easily, wiki has the link to reluding. I've taken 3 early type 3 speedos apart and all three of them were completely mucked up from 45+ yo grease. Reluded them with fresh wheel bearing grease now they spin silky smoove.

I also took mine apart and cleaned out the old dried up grease and re-lubricated the gears. It made a huge difference.

It will still spin freely with the dirt and grime in it, but it cause the cable to bind a little, that's why you hear whining sometimes.

So I replaced my Speedometer today (the old one was good but wanted to change the clock out so changed the speedometer to match) and then when I was driving it was working for a little while and then all the sudden dropped to 0mph.

Do you think this would be an issue with the cable, the speedometer, or both?

could be either - pull the cable and take a look....

Weird.... I just drove it again and the speedometer came back on for about 30 seconds and then went off again..... maybe just a loose connection....
