|
|
| I know the first thing you're asking is what the hell for? So I lost the use of my right arm in a snowmobile wreck. I've wanted a 911 since I first saw them. I know they made a type III three speed auto that was in a squareback, but its still just a 3 speed. I looked into making some kind of paddle system. Most current ones still use two paddles anyhow. I thought I could find a 912 shell just to do some design work on. Maybe even build a turbo bug motor or something in it. I'm an aero-space engineer and have built racecars with some friends for years. I can drive a stick if I have to, I just wouldn't want to do it as a daily driver. I also have a '71 Baja Bug that I get around ok with, but don't drive it much. I'm just seeing if there are any ideas or just bite the bullet and get a stick. What concerns me is all these idiots texting/eating/putting on makeup/watching movies/whatever are causing the states to pass more an more laws targeting 'distracted drivers'. I wouldn't want to do all the work fixing a 911 up just to have the state tell me I can't drive it. Any ideas/options? |

Porsche made a semi automatic transmission called the Sportomatic. Might be an option for you.
For more info, here is the website www.sportomatic.org/.
I've got a '68 Sporto and I've heard they had the option available until the late '70's. |

Don't know your budget, but the subarugears.com guys might be able to get an Auto Subaru in there-- I know they make a kit for the stick. Audi might be possible too-- Vanagon?
I usually don't post when I'm this clueless on a subject (open for debate, heh), but maybe this'll get some ideas rolling...
It comes up once and a while here-- post back what you find out.
Best of luck! |

I would think a baywindow bus automatic transmission would be the most straightforward swap.
I think the gearing/acceleration would be less than impressive. |

| I've had a few ideas from an air shifter to a clutch pedal with dual levers. If there was a sequential available, that would be easy, but aside from mega custom, I've never head of one. I'm not independently wealthy, but I didn't want to do thousands of mods to it that the next owner might not want. I can't seem to find the ads for the VW automatics now... |

Here is the Ad I have seen on there for the past few years. I don't know anything about rebuilding them, but I'm sure with a rebuild guide and there's always $200 in new tools, it can be done. I don't like going from a 5 speed to a 3 speed, what other automatics could be reworked into that?

Wouldn't one of the Triptonic transmissions be a viable option for you?
I'd like to see just what you come up with. I've got a bum leg myself and sitting in bumper to bumper traffic is a nightmare with a manual shift car. |

Don't those need a computer? I was hoping to keep it fairly simple. Someone else mentioned and Audi 5000 transaxle, but son't know anything about it.

| I'm really not sure about that. However I've read (somewhere, can't remember) that the Megasquirt EFI can control trans with electronic shifting. |
