OK this buddy of mine is trying to convince me that 2 stroke engines maintain the rated horspower at elevation verses the 4 strokes. I don't think so. They are both internal combustion engines. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

Well having worked as a motorcycle mechanic in Denver my vote is you lose 10% of your HP in any naturally aspirated engine at that altitude. 2 stroke are much more susceptible to running issues and engine damage if they are not jetted for altitude. The reason you lose power is the air is less dense. It also has less oxygen, so it will burn less fuel. Internal combustion engines make power by expanding the air brought into combustion chamber by burning fuel, the expanding air forces the piston down, not an explosion. Denser the air, more fuel you can burn for heat, more power you make. _________________ Fatchicks: Daily drivers, donor cars, collectibles. What can't they do? |

X2 my family fools with ultra light aircraft. there is a friend that runs a rotax in his. sounds like shit on the ground, but runs like a champ at 2-4000 feet. my inlaws plane has a control on tha dash to change mixture in flight. imho, it is MORE important for a 2 stroke, as pointed out, lean is not good for them. ask anyone who has ever had a 'soft seize' not good at all _________________

| I remember in an old outboard motor service manual I read it said that you should consider a propeller with a smaller pitch if the motor was to be used in higher elevations due to the loss in horsepower. And that was even after you made your carb jet corrections, so I think that means you're right and your friend is wrong. |
