I think most people only buy and install FUNCTIONAL equiptment for their vans. After all, if one wanted the Official Napa Auto Parts Chrome Kit, first one would need a Ford or Chevy..... _________________ 1985 Westy 'Club Joker' Euro Spec. 1.9L (Domo)

I didn't see that as snarky Domo. What does snarky even really mean?
I do though agree. Vanagons are more about practicality "bling" than just show "bling". It makes me think back to when I had my first car the first accessory I bought. It was one of those tinted strips that went across the
top of the windshield with Mustang written across it. The chrome kit was passed over in favor of neon green colored stuff. It was the 80's and Miami Vice was on TV. I even painted some of the stuff on my split window I had at the same time Neon Pink

Yeah.. I agree.
"Pre-runner" used to be a beater that was used to scope out race conditions.. But as desert racing went from beaters to the insane hi-tech stuff they have today... pre-runners became pretty highly tuned race vehicle in thier own right.
I'd hazard a guess that a top-flight pre-runner in use today probably would have won open class races 20-30 yrs ago.
That said.. I'll repeat something I posted on this subject a while back.. It would be a pretty cool project to build a "real" pre-runner out of a Vanagon. The yellow VR6 van linked in the video here on Samba a couple days ago comes to mind. .. just a 2WD version. _________________ 89 GL Westy, orig 2.1L WBXR.. Will it ever blow?
Well.. yes. It blew.. a big hole in the case. Time for a new engine.

I had a dry day and lifted my van to stage one. I went from 13.5' to 16.5. what a huge difference behind the wheel. My shocks and ball joints seem to limit me infront. in the back I might be limited by the CV's. My goal is to get to the 18" mark. then we will see where to go from there. _________________ ON SALE TODAY, CHECK IT OUT.

Why not lower the engine and trans in relation to the body so the same spec as a Syncro? While you are at it tilt them at a 10 degree angle like is done in Baja's and buggies. Upgrade to 930 CV's and 30x9.50 tires and you can hit a 20" ride height easy.
Up front you will need some different upper control arms to compensate for the ball joint angle. Also longer shocks front and rear but that is the easy part.

^^^^^^^ I have not gotten that far into it yet and this my first venture in going up. I have built half a dozen lowriders of various makes but never have i lifted a car. so there is a learning curve i need to catch up on.
you mention the buggies and that is something I have pondered.
Long travel buggy suspension? just a thought.
I am sure its all been done but its all new to me. _________________ ON SALE TODAY, CHECK IT OUT.

The articuation is limited, but if I lift a wheel on one side of the front it doesn't affect momentum. However in the rear with an open diff I have isses. Usually I don't have an issue with the rear lifting though. _________________ I have never owned a VW I didn't like, but there have been a few Fords and Chevy's.

That s a nice bit of video there, AnmlMthrM60..
Really shows what a 2WD can do.. with a little know-how.
I may have to pick up two of those tires for my dirt runnin' trips _________________ 89 GL Westy, orig 2.1L WBXR.. Will it ever blow?

THREAD RESURRECTION!
Stock '85 Westy springs on my '87 Wolfsburg with BFG A/T 27x8.5. Gets down fire roads, camp trails and beach access with ease. My wife removed the front "air dam" for us crossing a ditch.
