I have an early 63 single cab. It has the newer front brakes from what I can tell so far. They match the brakes off a 66 beam I have.
I am trying to order new brakes for the rear. How can I tell if it had the pre or post 63 brakes? Whats the difference? _________________ My collection:

you need to look at the rear drum diameter, or the axle nut actually. The later brakes are like 250mm drum, and the early ones are around 230mm. The dead giveaway is the 36mm nut for early, and the 46mm nut for late. There is some rare others, so just measure the drum diamether to be safe. Pictures work really well on the samba also.

Well I must have one of those bastard setups. Its a 36mm nut with 250mm dia drums. Are these drums valuable? 211 501 615B drums?
So would the 64up shoes be right?

My 1963 camper had a 1967 transaxle with the one year only 1963 one ton RGBs (one year only brake drum) and the 1963 frontend with the odd front drums, so I put big stub axle RGBs on the rear and a 1964-1967 frontend on it. The 1963 drums are a pain in the butt to find. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Well my 63 has a bent trailing arm. stupid PO bent it with a winch i think. I got a 66 beam for the front. I am going beetle IRS in the rear with the bus brakes.
So would the '64-'67 shoes work? _________________ My collection:

Now I remember that I installed the later model frontend on my 1963 bus so there would be thicker link pins. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |
