I'm stripping the pan and the bottom three inches of the body to bare metal on my 75 beetle.I cut out and grinded the rust the best i could.I have a few months welding ahead of me so, should i start welding now,or should i paint everything with rustbullet first ,then weld and repaint the areas burnt from welding? |

You always weld metal bare (no contaminates to interfere with the welds/sticking) with the exception of weld-through primer (made spefically for this type of job). Rustbullet is not a weld-through paint. |

All true, but on the other hand, if he doesn't at least prime all that bare metal he has now, he's going to be looking at a pile of rust after his "months of welding".
You should probably prime the whole mess with a good etching primer; however, you'll have to strip any area you'll have to weld back down to bare metal prior to welding.

Im not sure but i thought a little surface rust was good for the rust bullet to stick to.If not What if i paint the areas to be welded with weld through, and paint around that with rust bullet.how close to the welding should i go to avoid burning the paint? |

Ahh, I missed that "months of welding" part. What I'm doing is spray bombing the metal with spray paint primer for now, then when I'm ready to paint the whole car just strip it to bare. Or when I'm about to weld that area just strip that aprt again.
Rust bullet can be used as is on the metal, no need to let it surface rust at all. POR-15 is the one that surface rust may help grab to it as bare metal is too smooth for it.
Probably rust bullet the parts that doesn't need any welding then spray paint the welding parts. Rust bullet is tougher to strip then spray paint. You could use specialized penetrating oil to keep the bare metal from rsuting as well. These products are designed for fulltime bare metal hot rod and can be painted later on with no conficts. Or WD40 or similar oil but wipe it clean before welding or painting in the future (and keep it oiled up once in awhile). |
