so i got up at 7:00 this morning went to uhaul, only to sit outside for a hour as they open at 8:00 so we hit the road at 9 no problems so far at 12:50 we got to the po's house. took the grand tour, loaded up the bus and hit the road. then the winds start to pick up so we are swaying like hell.Got home around 6 then i stupidly pulled the key out of the ignition so the steering wheel locked and we can't get to unlock then we gave up on it after trying for a hour. so i left it on the trailer at my shop
how would you guys get the steering wheel to unlock?
anyways time for the pics
the engine is sitting on the mower next to the bus

Nice lookin Bus. Turn the steering wheel while you're trying to turn the key. It will unlock. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Maybe try a bead of white lithium grease on each side of the key. Run it in and out and then work the lock and steering wheel back and forth. It should break free. Make sure you are using the right key; I assume you have more than one. _________________ *****************

The Long bolts don't come out or they don't need to come out. You are most likely missing a bolt or nut some where. Look above the oil pump and flywheel area. If it seems too hard this is what ends up being the issue. _________________ AKA The Mummy |

Be sure to look in the Bentley manual there should be a picture with all the bolts and nuts that need to be removed when splitting the case. did you take the oil pump out too prior to trying to split the case _________________ AKA The Mummy

If it's the triple square bolt head under 3/4 cylinder it's not a case bolt but an oil passage or valve (depending on the engine), all case bolts have hex heads. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

with tapping it should come appart. The last rebuilder may have used some strong sealant to keep from leaking but looking at the pictures it dosen't look like it worked Recheck all possible bolts, did you remove the rear and front seal?? you usually don't need to but it may have a bunch of permatex or something which is holding the case together
This is the tool for splitting a case apart but not used often

Glad to see that you`ve moved up to the Bus league. If you need parts let me know I still have a few from the 71 also have most of the wood headliner and some uncut 5X5 sheet of baltic birch for the headliner if you need them.
