It sure is. A lot of people have done this. I think it was Klaussinator that did his interior for a couple of hundred total. But I have to ask if you can go as high as $2000 why not buy a good condition interior, which should still cost a lot less than 2k. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). The idea that has always intrigued me is a functional (though obviously not OPTIMAL) camping kit that could be loaded into the bus after removing the middle seat, and stowed in the garage again when camping weekend is done. You would have to be very smart about your design, but the opportunity to camp, and then haul the max amount of passengers or gear that a bus is capable of is too great an idea to pass up.

Same here. I have speculated over quick locking floor and wall connectors and various other aspects too. A modular interior for different occasions. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). RC:
I think he wants to buy a camper for less than $2000 and then create a good interior.
IMO: the less interior the better and/or have the additions easily removable. Use as needed or remove and store when not needed. I have no need for a stove in the camper. I removed the water tank and cut cubyholes into the side of the cabinet and made shelves for CD's, maps, etc. I also removed the ice box and put in shelves for storing a one burner stove, cooking equipmen, a MrHeater and tire chains. The one burner stove is used outside on the folding shelf of the cabinet The drainless sink is still there, but I cut into the counter top and dropped in plastic storage containers. these are used for wallet, sunglasses, loose change and are handy for other miscellaneous items. The whole Westy sink/ice box cabinet is easily removed for storage when not used.
These are all hacks to the OG Westfalia, but they are functional and of more use to me. I would rather use soft coolers with ice, plastic bottles for water, and have more room to move around inside. It's fun to be creative and clever with an interior, but lighter is better for the vehicle.
Aloha

RCNOTES, nice job on the interior. After looking at your picts, how many man hours do you think you had in the interior work? |

Been covered in many different posts - Lots of us have done it ourselves or customized the factory interior to fit our needs.
Here's a great thread for that "inspiration" you're looking for. Lots of great ideas here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=337301&highlight=custom+interior
I'm the first response near the top of the thread. Our handbuilt interior has gotten a lot of use and is holding up well. Ours is not "modular", although I've kicked that idea around some too, as mentioned by others above. Hmmmm . . . maybe the next one . . .

Here's mine.
Able to seat four or six at the table, the section behind the front seats nearest the door holds the Ice chest and the water tank. The one in the middle holds the porta-potty. _________________ Ken

Maybe we could make this the modular camping interior thread. I have been knocking the idea around for a while as well. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

Hey Mounain Minstrel -
VERY cool interior! And I like your solution to the old "I need a longer table" problem.
Talk me through it: I see two piano hinges, some drawer slides to raise the second hinge, and some side rails to lock the pieces into whatever position is chosen???? Am I close?!?

This is the general gist of what I have. About $100 in plywood and $7 in masonite particle board. It turned out nicely, and is easy to use. Works for me nicely. It wasn't quite finished in these pictures.

Pretty close Klauss. There is nothing that locks the two pieces in the open position. but instead there is a stainless steel bar that either of the two hinges rest on. When you want to extend the table you lift up at the wall and then the middle piano hinge holds the two pieces flat. I will get a picture of the underside of it tomorrow.
The hard part was figuring out how to have the sink and be able to seat six. This was my solution.
The sink is a steam pan so that it can be lifted out and dumped, but we found with our '70 that it was usually used outside the bus for dishes or whatever. Plus living in bear country, I do not like the idea of dumping waste water under the bus. _________________ Ken

I really like the steam pan idea; smart...rather than pricey.
I don't think I'll ever have 6 people in my bus unless I'm picking up the grands at the airport. Then again, I could switch religions and pick up some spare wives... _________________ "Consistent maintenance with quality products is the cheapest warranty you'll ever need."
