1976 2.0L FI

OK, so I *accidentally* threw out my OG hard plastic booster vac hose that resides in the engine bay. The two piece one that has the check valve inbetween.

So, since I haven't been able to find another OG one, I'm trying to replace this line with a reinforced brake vacuum hose. The problem that I'm having is that from what I've read this vacuum hose is 12mm ID, 13mm OD (this is what Ratwell says). The issue is that I can get a 12mm (roughly) hose that the check valve will fit into, but it is so thick (larger than 13mm OD) that it won't fit into the rubber "tee" at the intake manifold. I am reluctant to stretch the tee out trying to cram it in there. I looked at some other hoses that would work but they are not reinforced and I know that won't work.

I was thinking of getting some copper hose or something similar and using two small pieces of rubber hose to connect the check valve. I did peruse the copper tubing at the home depot and there may be a few sizes there that will work, but i'd definitely do something else if it was simpler. Thoughts?

I'm going to look into that, but your hookup is a little different where in your application the hose slides over a nipple on the carb, whereas mine the whole OD has to slip into a vacuum tee, hence the thickness issue.

I think i'm going to try getting a small chunk of 15/32" hose tomorrow and see if it fits.

no.

try to get the original hard plastic tubes, it will be so so much easier. without it you have lots of mucking around with gender changes and size changes. each end of the rubber Y is a different size, the plastic booster hose is different sizes depending which end you look at - one end is flared.

you might be able to use the rubber booster hose, a check valve grommet and a short piece of thin wall 1/2 steel tube to make the plenum end of the new hose assembly fit into the rubber Y.

Scott nailed it, a piece of tube will, the hose has too big an OD to fit in the tee.

That is what I thought.

I have been trying to source the original tube for the better part of a year to no avail. Every Bus that I have found locally that is getting parted either had no booster hose at all or it is rigged up with any number of different hoses.

I guess I'll get some hose and some tubing for now and try and make it work.

I just went throught this whole deal. the hard plastic tubes do not exist as new and any old ones will probably give up the ghost in a year or two then you will be chasing vac leaks.

buy the 15/32 hose and clamp it with new clamps. these are vac lines so you don't need reinforced rubber. cheapo water pump hose is fine. The metric stuff as noted on the Rattwell site is great if you can find any at any price. if you can't get the 15/32 then use 1/2 inch. the purist will laugh at me but it works when clamped and unlike the high pressure fuel lines that absolutely should be metric they wont catch your bus on fire.

just get the hose put it on and move on. I just installed my FI 2 litre engine and after weeks of looking i just put on the 15/32 and everything is just tits.

X2 - the old plastic hoses are near bullet proof. It is amazing how well the original parts work. We paid maybe $5 for parts plus the cost of the replacement rubber bushings that go at the fittings.

yes - they actually have the same part number but with a different alphbetical ending if I recall. The old ones turn to like a gum.

Last week I worked on a 1971 camper and the owner was complaining of brake fluid leaking. The bottom of the plastic tube where it connects to the lower MC reservoir didn't have any bushing installed at all. The upper reservoir had black electrical tape acting as the seal.

The grommets look like dissolved electrical tape when they rot.

The part for the brake fill line is 211611833 C

The part for the servo hose on a late bay is 211611833 D

hard to say - one has notches and one does not but when you hold both in your hand that question will go through your mind because they are so close to the same. I wondered that too.

I have inquired about it at Bustedbus recently and Chris did not have any there.
