Where is the dash vin plate on my 69 standard bug?
There aren't even holes there where one was. I know the tunnel and the spare tire well have a vin but isn't there a metal vin on the dash or door pillar by the seat belt ? is it ok to be missing the door jam vin sticker and the dash vin? Did the 69 ever come with dash vin plate? I've read a lot of mixed advice please help me. Also what happens when the NY registration/title says you have a red car but its been painted another?

Thanks first post here.....and first vw's bought both this month.

There should be a dash plate on the driver side, it's possible the dash had been replaced and someone removed it.
I would contact DMV, BMV and let them know about the color change, shouldn't be a big issue.
Also, due to the age of the car I think missing the door jam sticker/dash vin number isn't a huge issue.

There is a seller on thesamba who makes reproduction VIN decals for drivers side A-pillars. They look pretty close to the originals, the only real difference is that they are not self-destructing (perforated).

My 69 does.

However, it doesn't have a door jamb decal with the VIN on it. When did they start putting a VIN decal there?

My 69 has a dash VIN plate. I understand that the dash tag started in January of 69 so early 69 cars (ones built in 6Cool wouldn't have one. Mine is riveted to the dash vent on the far left side.

Do we know at what VIN the change was made? I didn't know the switch was made mid-run, and Have not seen a 69 with the VIN on the dash.

1969 model year production didn't start until August. If your car was made in July 68, you need to change your user ID because it's a 68.

My early Aug 68, 1969 Beetle didn't have the VIN tag on the dash.

in usa the car is made for a target year. (law) (new law)
i think the 1st new law kicked in , at 1968.

so 1968 cars can be made in july1 of 67.

i have a motor cycle
and is 1966
and they made 3 years of them in 3 months in japan
that was legal then. (cars too?)

so are you saying these VW are same way.
and that the forum is asking for build date and not market date?

the rules changed in 1968 and then in 1981
but is complex and over my head.

thanks for helping

Mine has no VIN either, November 68. Like someone said earlier probably Jan 69 the VIN tags started on the dash.

ok
in the USA , the cars are designed and manufactured
for a specific year ( not sure when the law changed for VW)

so the mfg, at the end of the fiscal year. July1, 1967, start making
cars for the 1968 USA market year. (usa is paranoid they are getting old cars ,if made more than 6month early (not me)
and also hate for mfg to actually test track a car off the line.
due to some really crazy people here. (makes car used.....)

that is how you see new cars, starting in DEC.
they were made before DEC 31st
some well before.
on newer cars, you can see that body plate
it clearly says Mfg date. but is not model year , here.

in 81, the laws changed again, and the VIN was born 17digits and std codes.
snowing plant codes. mfg codes. and engine codes, and weight classs etc.
this old car i have is just 9 digits
first three tell "118" tell me what market and maker.
and the SN range shows the year, by pure ranges of sn , shipped in each plant (when and if)

i read that Honda was told in 1968 that they can not build cars or bikes
in massive amounts for 3 years . ( in one RUN, or LOT)

imagine starting up a plant for 1 month , make 50k cars then shut down till next year, honda wanted to make 3 years worth at a crack
I cant blame them.

boy i'd pay $2000 for a band new 1968 , covered in bee's wax
like they were then. right now. huh? devil be dang those tags.

i can see others here, know the plant codes, and run volumes and vin ranges here. i do not. only general history.
Cheers to you
