|
|
I've got a 1970 adventurewagon high top and I need to accomadate a family of five ( two adults and three young kids 5,3,3 months). So I'll be modifying Westy bed over the winter to a full with bench to sit three across. Also moving it forward to the middle row to get the layout as shown below.
I know it will be tight for the kids upin the back ( mom and I have a queen size bed!) but its the most efficient layout I could think of. Having the high top for storage helps alot too. Anyways, let me know what you think and if you have any helpfull suggestions I'd appreciate it.
thanks

The layout looks fine and would work if not a little claustrophobic. I would keep the westy seat in its default position and put a buddy seat in behind the driver. 3 kids even on a full width seat still fight with other and with a buddy at least they have a little personal space. I would have a concern over the seat belt mounting by moving the seat.
For sleeping how about building a shelf at the rear of the bus for baby. I have copied the following, look at the post of Mikey9 as its a very good idea for such a small child.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4...p;start=20
As for the other two kids I would look at building a full double for the front of the high top. A fold out/drop down bed would be cool and should be fairly easy to construct. |

Thanks for the link to the baby bed in the back... I have not thought of that option and definately something to consider.
My wife is from a family of four kids and tells me of the epic battles with her brothers sitting three across. At least they'll be within arms reach of us |

Hey Chris thats great. I've actually never seen someone do this until now.
I had a similar idea and one night and mocked it up with cardboard . I dropped the idea as I thought the bed would be to large when stowed. You have a good solution for this

I realise what I say may be shot down but whatever.
Can high tops have a concertina type bed board in the top? Here's mine:
There's also the top sleeping layout they used in the Devon Moonraker.
http://www.devonmoonraker.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/sales-brochure.html
And keep teh front cot. I've toyed with the idea of some kind of fold out thing that sits across the front seats, and has sides which fasten to the bulkhead or something, and the steering wheel to make a relatively inescapable rigid cot. _________________ Vehicle: 1975 Special order delivery walkthrough panel based pop-top camper (LCA / Sunliner). Hey Norm,
Not sure if it will work, but how about leaving the full width z bed in the original location, and adding a second rear facing z bed in the front.
You might need to adjust the size of the cushions on each bed to make it fit, but it would give you the same sleeping arrangement thats in your picture. It would also give additional seating when not in bed mode. Unfortunately, you would also lose the walk through...
Maybe, some sort of hybrid with two small rear facing chairs on each side of the walk through that have the z-bed hinges instead of 1 large bench! Then you could utilize the original westy stool in the middle when in bed mode?!? (i love thinking about camper interiors!!)
Just a thought,
Andrew
By the way, I just picked up a used 1641 engine for my bus!! It is still possible that it might be running in some form before winter!! |

Thanks for your thoughts on the different configurations. I think moving the the Westy type bed up to the mid position works best for me.
I've come to decide that rather than building the base frame from scratch I'll make it from two OEM seats. Here is the scheme to graft / fabricate two 2 place mid seats into one full width bench frame. Note, the back supports are already removed. Also, I've looked into getting a full width OEM mid seat but it seems the frame close to the door side is intentionally bent to get access in the back. I need the frame as straight as possible.

Had the frame fabricated by Billie at Stockornaut in Georgia. Great guy to work with... he really wants to do the job right!

got the seat seat base assembled with westy hinges and installed! it was an education to say the least.
I really like that the tire fits nice and flat behind the seat base. Thats where it is staying.

Lot of work here, you should be able to get 5 in thought without too much problem.
I've got 3 kids. 3 sit on rear seat and I have seat behind passenger + 2 front seats so no problem there.
Where the sink goes I rebuilt that entire side so when we are parked up it is a bench seat with cushions (fits 3) as well. Underneath houses fridge and cooker.
To cook I remove the top and swap it into a table etc.
Sleeping - in the front there is a hammock, my westy also has double bed up top and bed underneath. Later on i can change the 'side' seat into a pull out rock and roll bed. We've also got as awning with inner tent, and as a last resort a proper 4 person tent that attaches too.
Could be claustrophobic but the awning makes the difference.
good luck, always good to see new ideas |

Mocked up and made templates of the mid seat
rear kids bed temporarily installed
cooler fits nicely with plenty of storage to the side and between it and the bulkhead in front of the cooler
and a nice 58" x 84" bed for mom and dad

no new pictures but even if I had any you would be hard pressed to see any progress.
I'm happy on how its coming along as everything "fits" as planned and even fits in some cases when I had no idea there was a chance of not fitting! you need some luck on your side when you do all your work outside under lights after the kids go to bed.
You know how it is.
There will be a big push in the next month to get this "functionally ready" enough to go to the upholsters in MAY. (crap.. did I just commit to something?)
I'll have detailed picks in a couple of weeks when I finish the bed structure. _________________ Aerodynamics is for people who don't know how to build engines. |

so in theory, if you had a pop top, you could sleep 6 people? ....what a thought...
edit, 7 if you have 3 kids...
edit2: im an idiot, and missed the high top....so it might work if the upper bed was a few inches lower... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose
