well here is the radiator all mounted up. i also got the throttle cable all fixed up. i had to drill a hole closer to the top of the pedal to get more activation because it would only open up about 3/4 throttle. now its all 100% when you want it. i had a few springs so i added 2 throttle return springs so i have a nice and stiff throttle. not sure if you can see it in the pics but i cut the chunk of the rear cage off that connects the two sides of the frame. i had to grind out a bunch in the middle so that it would clear the cam pully. im only going to run this till i can bend up a rear cage. my boss has a brand new hydrolic tubing bender i can use anytime. hopfully i get some coolant lines run on it this week so i can drive it. im going to put a water temp gauge in it tomorrow. i should be able to drive it for awhile before i need the cooling fan. it should be here by the end of the week.

That's the fan I had on my rad. Don't rely on those plastic hold downs to work for long. They'll snap with any off roading.
Looking good though. I am sure you will love it. |
what do you use to hold them if they break? |
I did this because most of my off roading was in the bushes and did not want the radiator getting punctured or damaged by branches, etc. I also didn't want it standing upright for a clearer view around me while driving on the street. I wanted it bullet proof for hard off roading as hard packed is a lot more jolting on the vehicle than sand is.

| That's one heavy of a beast engine to put in. I was always trying to find some stats. on what it weighed but could never find anything. Nice grunty horsepower though. |

ok i got coolent lines and exhaust on it. im still waiting on my fan for the radiator. the exhaust is just a glass pack welded on a u bend. it sounds amazingly good! kinda loud but not terrible. i also wired in a electric temp. gauge. i drove it around town for awhile but stopped because i was running about 220 degrees. im hoping the fan will be here tomorrow.
i will have to say I LOVE ALL THE POWER!!!
this thing is so flippin fast compared to the vw motor!! im not runnin around dumpin the clutch because of the weak sedan tranny but its fun to get on it. i bet the weight to power ration is better than a corvette! its not a total wheelie machine. i will do it if you blip the throttle hard but if you roll into it and nail second it will bring the front tires up about 8 inches and stay there and GO! i stongly recomend this conversion!!! the torque is so nice to have. i notice i put around town in 2nd instead of first because you have all that low end grunt. i will update what kind of difference the fan makes
i got to say it again I LOVE IT!!

Sounds like fun. In my buggy I beat I guy in a 5.0L Mustang Convertible, just about every snot nose kid in his hunk of Jap. scrap, and my friend's Audi 2.0L Turbo (chipped and bigger turbo). Now you need the brakes to go with all that power.
Make sure all those rad connections are super tight. I ended up welding a bead on the end of my coupler piece and putting double gear clamps on them. I was lucky, a hose came apart and sprayed hot fluid everywhere, luckily it didn't get on my two children in the back seat at the time.

| I was always thinking if a did a conversion if id got ecotec or 2.3. Im a huge ford fan but the lighter weight is better. but now, im definitely going with a 2.3 if i do it |
im sure the ecotec is sweet to! even more power with less weight. only thing is the cost of the ecotec build.
and riNR i already had to tighten one of them up because it was making a puddle under it. i think i will get some more clamps and put some more on it.
i tracked my fan and it will be here today!!! _________________ My build thread:

well i got my fan installed. i have to say the mounting kit is JUNK!!! the little washers that are supposed to zip on the ties are the problem. i couldnt get them tight to keep the fan from being loose because they wouldnt hold. so i didnt cut off the excess and i looped it back through the fins a couple times. i drove it for about an hour and they held up ok. with the cooling fan running and driving around town at low speed i am running right at 200. i left the fan on and went down the gravel road for 2 miles at about 60 and it still stayed at 200. i am going to get the coolest thermostat they have tomorrow at the parts store.
there was a sensor in the exhaust manifold that blew apart tonight. i took it off and welded the hole back in. its still leaking alittle bit so i think im going to get a plug for it tomorrow to.
other than that things are going good so far! _________________ My build thread:

The company who made my fan also had an optional thermostatic switch that you could put in line with the fan. I just let mine run full time as my radiator was a little on the small side. While cruising around town and off roading it always ran fine temperature wise, but when on the highway and cruising at 70 mph the temperature would start to climb on hotter days.
Have you thought about redistributing the weight in the car at all? While doing wheelies is cool it sure makes for a car that handles like crap with so much of the weight hanging out back. If you are not running a cutting brake you will have a heck of a time turning in the sand.
Sounds like you're having fun with it, and that's what its all about. Enjoy! |

yes i have thought about the weight issues. i think im going to make a heavy front bumper for it. i already have a turning brake. i think my next upgrade is going to be front brakes. its a king pin with spindle mounts right now. one is kindof bent so i think im going to go with a 4 lug disc brake set up. i will probably have bigger tires up front as well. all these things will add a bit of weight to help plant the front end.
breaking is a major issue right now as well. i have disc brakes on the back right now but its not enough when your going that fast! _________________ My build thread:

well i have developed some problems. i think its all in the carb. when its cold i have to hold it wide open for it to start. it blows a fair amount of black smoke like it was flooded. i also started getting a mid range sputter. i was talking with the parts store guy and he said it sounds like my float was set to high. i ajusted it down quite a bit and went for a drive. it had sat since sunday early afternoon. it was very hard to start like it was very flooded. once i got it running i didnt have any problems. it ran great the whole time so i took care of my midrange sputter. when its hot it will start right up with just a tap of the key. i let it cool for about an hour. and same thing it was very hard to start. i can pump all i want but i have to hold the pedal to the floor for it to come to life. this is a holley 350 2 barrel carb. i completely rebuilt it before i put it on. any ideas?? _________________ My build thread:

Several things have bit me with that carb.
A vacuum leak between the throttle plate and the carb body.
Warped base plate. (lapping it back flat on a surface block, both sides. plate glass and 600 grit paper works good too) I use a THIN coat of non hardening permatex on both sides of the gasket.
Worn and leaking throttle shaft (butterfly) shaft seals/bushings. Holley used to sell a repair kit with delrin bushings that worked well.
Forgetting to put the little ball bearing back in the accelerator pump well.
Too big of an accelerator pump shot.
Pin holes in the pump diaphram. (I couldn't see 'em but they were there)
Dirt in the passageway under the main jets.
Float sinking (the brass one can be checked and repaired) nitrophil floats will break down over time with 10% ethanol fuel, and shed little pieces of s*it into the mains.
Over torqueing the top cover screws. (cut the gasket)
Happy hunting, Paul _________________ If it turns $$$ into smoke and noise, I'm there.
