I used the search and found several older posts about who had the best quality vs price on Ghia pans. Much mention is made of Action imports but they do not seem to be the most cost effective (didnt say cheapest) these days. Has anybody bought any lately? I'm in houston so shipping is and issue. Looks like $$75-100 to ship from the west coast. Forgot to say but I'm asking about full pan halves
Thanks _________________ Project X

The Thing Shop gives half off on shipping when you buy a set. I would not think the shipping cost would be too bad from AZ to Houston - especially with half off.
They are European made and the same thickness as the originals. That is what you want to look for quality-wise if you are shopping. _________________ 1971 Ghia Convertible Autostick

I hear what you are saying about quality, but 295 a side is too steep for me. _________________ Project X

I odered the Action Import pans and found out they were on back order just today so canceled my order. He said it would be two weeks before he has any. Those Action have are the Denmark made, i've welded in Bug pans like those and they are great quality. So i ordered the ones from CIP1 and they are the thinner ones but if your on a budget like me they are a great value.Do not come with seat tracks though. These were $139.95 each and shipping to Texas was $72.54 UPS ground. It comes down to how much your budget is for me as i got a long way to go on my Thing project/money pit. |

I know saving money is good, but with the effort involved in replacing the pan halves an additional $320 is cheap insurance that means you won't end up doing it again. _________________ OK Thang |

Something to keep in mind with a pan replacement is the peripheries like jack points, seat tracks, floor mat mounting tabs, etc need to be installed. I think TTS is the only place that has all of that stuff available. They even offer the pans with that stuff already installed. http://www.thethingshop.com/prodinfo.asp?number=181FPH-CS _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie

Yes the cost is in the labor.
I have a friend who paints houses. He said you would be amazed how many people try to save a buck by wanting him to use the cheapest paint.
The cost of the best quality paint versus the cheap paint is inconsequential relative to the labor cost.
The same goes for quality parts. I have never seen a cheap part that saves money or time. If you can buy the same quality part cheaper that is good. If you don't have the money I would save a bit more and go for the best quality. _________________ 1971 Ghia Convertible Autostick

Correct me if I'm wrong but quality would be two-fold when talking about replacement pans. There seems to be two gauges out there an 18 and TTS has a 19?. The other is fitment.
None come with seat tracks, jack points, or hooks for mats.(thats extra)
Most opinions voiced so far would make me think Ghia owners are screwed and should install Thing shop pans as they are the best. _________________ Project X

I don't know where TTS gets their pans or what thickness they are (or if they are really any different from any other vendor's) They might be the same dansk from denmark that some of the other vendors sell(like karmannghia.com). I just know that they offer the pan ready to go and/or they have the individual pieces needed if you want to set the pan up yourself which none of the other vendors do. _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie

| It also depends whether or not you are concerned in having jack points, mat clips seat tracks, etc.... I wasn't and went with the Ghia pans from CIP. They fit in great with a little trimming, here and there. If you are on a budget then you probably are not "Restoring" to perfection. This is costly. If it's a driver, I would go Ghia. |

Thats my way of thinking. My Thing project is far from a restoration and
i will not have floor mats, care less about jacking point, i'm useing front seats out of a 67 so don't need Thing tracks. My Thing will look early military plan jane pretty much.
If i had the desire to do "restoration" then yeah TTS would probably be the ticket. And the stock pans lasted what 38 plus years anyway.CIP should last half that at least huh? |

Depends on how you coat them and how you care for your Thing.
Even TTS pan haves will not last long if left in the weather poorly coated. (coming from a East US point of view) _________________ The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

| As a result of their size (not weight) , shipping for 1 pan or 2 pans will be just at $100 I can get the heavy duty danish pans for just a bit over $200 per side. |

The thing shop pans are a nice fit, but they are spendy. I have used a couple of different ghia pans and they are not the best fit. They almost always need to be trimmed and the bolt holes are not drilled. The seat rails do not come with them either. _________________ Daryll http://www.azbaja.com P.R.

Are all the pans Danish? Seems there is little stoclk right now and each place is waiting to get them from Europe. KGPR has them for 135 a side, and a set at my door for about 345. Seems ok except for the shipping. Anybody done business with them? _________________ Project X
