Thirty years sitting under the oaks, deep in the Mendocino County forest, an early 1959 Bench Seat Kombi rests. Unsmashed and very complete, it sits half buried in generations of decaying oak leaves, dirt and rat shit, on a precipitously accessed mountain.

I've just been given confirmation that if I can get it out, I can have it. Cool

This Friday afternoon, I'm heading north to this source of genuine rat shit and piss stink, and effect a single-handed recovery. Unfortunately, I will not have time to effect a true "Drive-Out", nor is towing the Kombi out possible -at all. The dirt road is nearly 45 degrees, so the mission will be to restore the brakes on site, drive it down to a lower location, at which time I will flat-tow the bus out from there. More details to come.

This is a wood rat nest... 36 is stuck:

I went and poured a coffee to settle in for the read and discovered the story had just begun.

Looking forward to updates on this one as much as any other rescues you have affected over the years!

The penultimate drive out and unveiling of the prize are eagerly anticipated. Cool

AHHHHH.... Want more! I hate the teaser story, but love it just the same. Better than dumb ass reality TV.

So, more of a "coast out" or "pull out" adventure. Nice!

Wondering if I should pack the complete running forty, rigged aux tank with fuel line, battery(s)... thinking about it. I've got to be able to drive it 20 mostly off road miles to Willits. I'm already committed to the hardest job anyway, that of restoring the brakes. Can I actually restore the brakes, get it running, drive it to it's destination AND get home by Sunday night?

I think it's doable, but I've got to have my shit together.

Hoping not to disappoint. We know I got burned on the last one when the bus was located 50 yards over on the neighbor's property.

Let's just say I'm gathering my tools...

Between you and Christopher you should always have a complete set of rebuilt brakes on hand for a quick extraction.

Shoes, honed and working cylinders already mounted to backing plates with usable drums. Remove old, bolt on new and see ya later!

Good luck on your quest , I understand the motivation of new funky old buses and such....

Eagerly awaiting spot reports and mishaps along the way ....

Make sure the deck lid is secured this time dude.

Brian doesn't need a shot, he eats a bowl of Cinnamon Tetnus Crunch for breakfast every day!

Those gas can holders look cool on the back hatch. Good luck with the drive/roll out. Looks like the bumpers are good and straight especially that rear slash cut with towel bars.
