A couple pictures of the snapped axle before the actual Drive Out video...
I used a magnet to get as many particles as possible out of there. The procedure is pretty straight forward, but there's a fair amount of stripping down to effect the replacement. Roads Less Traveled adventure drivers might consider taking along a spare and two fulcrum plates.
Notice my non-text book swap here with a passenger side axle. Curious what informed mechanics have to say about that. I know the splined torsion bars are pre-loaded during manufacture and are specified for right or left sides, but I've done no reading on axle or trans work. I would think VW may have done similar engineering on the axles. Input on this?
I'm happy to say that the swap went perfectly and the most excellent new Greg Banfil/Vintage Warehouse/Lowbus.com surplus mystery big nut RGB transmission is back in action, shifting perfectly, smoothly and not shedding even a drop of oil. The thing is so much faster than the Mountain Ratio M coded trans that was in the forty-powered 63 (also from Greg Banfil -out of his SO-1- thank you). I think I got tailed by the highway patrol last night on the long drive home, and with the fresh new gear oil, the flame throwing -now cool running- mystery 1600 motor and the ass kicking big nut trans... I think I lost em! Oh yeah...
Ok, the big moment, what we have all been waiting for. The Actual Drive Out:
The route I took was pretty straight forward, all back roads leading through the 4X4 Tomkie Road creek sections all the way through the woods to the back side of Willits Ca. Drove directly past the police station and successfully to the destination before night fall. All went exactly according to plan. Really happy the camera battery allowed this last video, and the special-to-my-heart Déjà vu image I took up in the creek.

That car in your video going the opposite way on Tomkie Road must've done a double take.

You're welcome. It's part of my intention to motivate some with these missions, glad I could help.
The bus will be at the Vellejo Bus Fest on August 14th.
Here, at the Moore Compound, the bus is seen with it's arms raised in praise for being rescued from seemingly interminable boredom:

As soon as I saw the picture with the basket, I thought it was Longaberger. Too funny that you know it's a gathering basket. My wife sells them too. Damn baskets are all over my house.
