| Very nice choice on the Ram-FLo air cleaners. Also like how you set up the linkage on the back (or front) side of the carbs. There's plenty of room for it back there. Makes for a nice clean set up! |
I got the Ram Flo's for a steal on eBay, $39 for the pair! I think he upped the price after I bought that set. The linkage is the Bugpack/Tayco linkage and is the only one I could find for those carbs on a Type 3. It will only go on that way in the back, the heim joints pull up on the throttle shafts. The spacers needed a bit of adjustment out of the box and I had to run to the hardware store a couple times to get some that fit and would sync up right.

Yep, It's a late Type 3 cooler. It had an early one with smaller passages, but I didn't want to mess with the green adapter seals and spacers. Seems like the later ones with the larger passages would have better flow anyway. Maybe?
This afternoon I thought I'd tackle the CV joints. Been putting it off knowing how filthy it is. I got three mostly clean and then the last one didn't want to come apart. Noticed a bit of rust in there, and then as I continued cleaning it just uncovered more.
Something was wrong with that wheel, the bearing retainer was banged up, the spacer between the rear bearings was mashed, and the axle stub was scored. I probably could have gotten away with using the axle, but replaced all of it anyway. Now to find a replacement CV. Here's the pics.
These two are old and have been replaced:
Here's what I found tonight:

Somehow I knew that was coming...
I definitely have a vision for this car, really wanting to get it on the pan again so I can start putting everything back. |

A big thanks to clatter for stopping by yesterday with the two CV's! Got them all cleaned up tonight. Also blasted and got a two coats of MS on the driveshafts. Going to bolt up the transaxle this weekend and start the front end.
I went to pick-n-pull today and pulled the larger internal sway bar out of a Square beam to use in mine. Also grabbed the starter for my engine stand and some nice motor mounts. I popped of the thrust ring for the upper control arm too, the other side was shot so I only got the one. I started cutting the windshield out, but there was a bunch of silicone squeezed under the seal, I was being so very careful, and then - crack. But anyway, a Square donating to a Fasty, makes me .
10 min with the soda blaster and the starter was looking nice.
Here's how I've been cleaning up a lot of the fasteners and such. I have a vibratory tumbler I bought from Cabelas for $50, they're used for polishing brass bullet casings. I add a bunch of small parts with the green pyramid media in the strainer. You can get them at HFT as rust cutting media or online. I add about a cup of water with the parts and green stuff and let it go a full day. Everything comes out very clean. Then I use the tin-zinc plating kit from Eastwood, pic a couple pages back. Last I run them with a little bit of metal polish in some corn cob litter from Petco, it's for hamsters or something. Let that go for a couple hours, then put in fresh clean corn cob and let it go another couple hours. A tedious process but you can see the end result.

Got a little done this weekend. Good to see some parts coming off the shelves.
Put the CV's back together and got them mounted, no pics as my hands were covered in grease. Transaxle mount cleaned up nice. Is this right for the nosecone seal? Just fits up against the pan?
I'm following how BerT3 sealed his tunnel. Waxoyl seems to be a European product, so I got something similar. I got it everywhere in there.
Mounted the beam today. The upper bearing on the old beam was broken. I must have blasted and painted non-matching beam mounts as one of them has a really small hole for the zerk. I have another to swap it out with later.

First, thanks for all all the positive comments! Really glad I started documenting all this.
I have a bit of a problem with my front wheels and need some help. The rotors have the lip/ring on them that interferes with the center hole in the wheel. I took them to the machine shop today to get that lip machined off.
One problem solved.
Next problem.
I have these really cool center caps I want to use but the setscrews get in the way of the grease cup. The cup does fit inside the center cap with the setscrews removed. If I can find really short setscrews that may work. Maybe grind a little off both ends of the setscrew? Smaller grease caps? Drill 3 holes into the side of the wheel to recess the setscrews?
Any suggestions?

The problem there would be finding some that are the same length or shorter than the thickness of the threaded portion of the center cap. The grease cup just barely fits inside the center cap. Maybe McMaster will have some. |

I got the center cap issue worked out with some tiny setscrews. Wasn't a big deal like I thought it would be.
Here's my rotors after the machinist took off the lip that interferes with my wheels. He did a good job.
I'm going to use an electric fuel pump, rigged the original mount to work with mine.
Some pics of the beam going together. I rebuilt the calipers myself and used G2 caliper paint. They turned out nice. I got the alignment and ball joint adjustment close, but will still take it to an alignment shop when I'm all done. I'm down 2 inners in front, and about a 1/2 inner in back. I bounced on it quite a bit and it sits very level.
The insides of the front fenders were primed with epoxy. Then I seamed sealed the headlight buckets and corners. As much as I hated removing all the rubberized undercoating, I used some paintable stuff in the upper front fenders and around the headlight bucket. That's the way my original fender was with paint over the undercoat. Then I shot some epoxy over it this evening. I also finished the repairs in the rear wheel wells.

Thanks, I've been collecting parts for the past year for this thing. I do need to clean up, the pan has become my toolbox.
Shot some 2k on the front fenders and have been block sanding. It's taking forever... _________________ 69 Fastback Build (Doris) |

Thanks! I'm pretty happy with how it's coming together. Still a lot more to go though, I'm really hoping to have it together by the end of the year.

Let's hope so. I'm still trying to figure out something/somehow to coat the insides of the heater channels. I don't think the waxy product I used in the tunnel would work very well. Maybe one of those spray paint nozzles that sprays 360* on a long tube? _________________ 69 Fastback Build (Doris) |

where can you get those? Few paint and panel places I talked to have no idea what I mean when I ask about them.
Guess they don't do this or care about in in Australia? |
