'56 was the first year of the 2 fold ragtop. Before that they were 3 fold. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

Okay... would like some input from you super smart and experienced oval guys out there...
Would like to do the following as our first steps with this project:
6 volt battery install... any particular brand? what are the crank amp requirements, etc...
Get original motor running: clean carb, points, plugs, etc... drain and replace oil... run a temp. fuel source from a gas can while tank is getting restored... just while getting her running in the driveway... hopefully coil is still good.
full brake job... typical for a car that has sat for 25 years... input appreciated here for sure!
narrowed 4" beam with drop spindles 2.5"... for stock drum brakes for now. (this is important to me, so don't bother talking me out of it... I've opted not to cut the stock beam so I can always put it back on)
lower rear?... one click... not even sure what that means yet, as I've never lowered a bug... (this is important to me, so don't bother talking me out of it...)
sandblast wheels at work and paint orange to match traces of orange paint on wheels now...
install tires... would love Coker 165/15 wide white walls... but $$$ will probably force us to go cheap with radials... recommendations?
Need window rubber scrapers replaced inner and outer... probably just get a new molding assembly?... any input?... I have some replacement rubbers, but would have to drill rivets out and reinstall... seems like a pain.
Rag top canvas/vinyl needs to be replaced. Definately would like some input here. Framework seems to be functioning fine. We slide it back every time we show her off, and she latches up fine.
Headliner is pretty bad. Would like a recommendation of source. Only found regular headliners so far. Do we need to pull windows to do this? I would imagine yes.
Interior panels are rough and warped. Love the brick red. Probably replace with repops.
Seat covers are pretty bad, though they definately have the patina...err...old thing going on... lol... tempted to sew up the tears for now.
hmmm... this is a pretty good start, for sure.... thanks again for your input!!! _________________ 64 Type 3 Notch

If the car has been sitting for that period of time then I recommend replacing the entire brake system, master cylinder, rigid lines, flex lines, wheel cylinders etc brakes are an important safety aspect of your ride, do it right the first time. Also check your wheel bearings both front and rear, replace as necessary after a full inspection for servicability.
All your door rubbers and interior bits and bobs can be sourced from Wolfburg West for top quality stuff, and yes to do the headliner correctly you need to remove the windows _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

I really like your car. Lots of Soul
With all due respect, there is nothing gangster about whitewalls on a Bug that is slammed and tucking hard (in my opinion).
I like your idea to clean up the smoothies. I would do that, replace rubber seals and mob it |

haven't posted in a while... but here's a quick update on our progress with "Black Beauty"...
dropped engine and disassembled to the long block... she was very dirty, caked with clay and oil... oil cooler almost completely blocked... removed heads to take a peek... she's ok for a little bit till we can rebuild her... cleaned all cooling fins on heads and cylinders, cleaned oil cooler fins and visually confirmed it is clean... cleaned carburetor as good as i can without taking apart... tank is out and needs to be dipped and coated
sandblasted engine tin and wheels, primed and painted a matt orange color
removed front suspension completely... ordered custom 5" narrowed air beam with drop spindles from www.punchdrunkcustoms.com
painted new beam assembly matt orange
had two 145/65/15 tires installed on stock rims for ultimate slammability on front
today I will be tackling rear suspension... temporarily lowering at least 2 clicks... will be putting drop plate and air ride on rear as well when funds are better...

I have been working on high end hot rods for years, and am ready to open my own shop specializing in VW's, and other cool projects...

Orange looks sweet. A little originality is good. Thought a candy tangerine choptop baby window with flared fenders and black diamond tuck was a dream car when 10 (late 70s). Now, not so much.
Cool that your little boy is into it. He'll have good memories from all the time you spend together doing whatever to it. My boy looks at mine and just says "That's an old ugly car. A lambo would be cooler." Guess who's not getting it when I die. _________________ Eating through a straw sucks. Wear your helmet. |
