Question about Repro Heater Channel

Hi. I am replacing the heater channels in my 65 Beetle. I have noticed a gap between the inner (heat carrying) channel and outer (support) channel. There was no gap on my original channel. Do I need to fill this gap in? If so, would seam sealer be okay, or should I weld in some metal? Thanks in advance.

I am also replacing the heater channels in my 65 Bug. May I ask which brand of channel you purchased and how do you like the fitment, etc.
The only thing I can say about the gap you show is that my originals had a thick black sealer in that area, but the gap did not look to be quite as big as yours. Good luck with your project

I believe I got the Dansk heater channels. I seem to recall searching the forums to see which ones were the best. Still, I have had to do some minor trimming to get it to fit. I have been folowing the procedure demonstrated in the Bugme video, and I have found that it is somewhat deficient in detailing how to free the channel up from either end. Also, I realize I will have to save the guides for my front kick panel heater doors to install on my new heater channels.

I also had to patch in new metal in my front firewall, where the front of the heater channel attaches. With a little thinking, and the use of my Dremel, I think I am getting a good fit. I will know more when I go back to my project Monday. If you want to see pics of my heater channel, or other pics of my project, just look for my photos in the gallery. I will post more as my restoration progresses.

It has been progressing more slowly than I had anticipated, but I am not in a rush...want to take my time and do it right. Good luck with yours.
