| I have a bug now. Saw a neighbor has a 914 for sale and was gonna go look at it. He wants 1500 which seems real steep. It has no front or rear glass and has been sitting for several years. I don't see any rust in the pics. What should I be looking for if I consider to take this home. What is the going rate for a 914 pile minus the glass? It does not run. Are the parts gonna be Corvette expensive? Thanks |

| Looks like a parts car to me. To get it looking and running again you should know that the sky is the limit for money you can put into it. At the very least you will need to redo the brakes, engine, transmission, I am sure you will find rust so that will cost. The tires, interior and so on, the list will go on and on. if you have the tools and the time then go for it, but if you would like to drive a Porsche 914 soon then find one that is running and enjoy it. |

Take a zero off of the end of that $1,500.
Stay clear if you want a car, buy it for the $150. if you need a few parts. Strip it and sell the remaining bits and bobs to fellow enthusiast.
Honestly, that's a classic money pit with a "P" word attached to it. |

While 914 are mostly made up of VW parts, they still carry Porsche price tags on those parts. There is not a lot of cross over stuff from the Bug, like other VW models. Also a Huge thing to consider is that the 914 is a Unibody and not a pan chassis platform, which is made far worse by the fact that they were all Targa tops. So the roofs offer no structural integrity. Simply put, when they get rusty, they tend to break in half. Yes they can be repaired, but it is very costly, even if you do all the work yourself. Check out the prices of repair panels on this site. http://www.porsche-restoration-panels.com/includes/prp/9141.php Also the type 4 engine is very costly to rebuild and more complicated than a type 1 motor. Why? I don't know. I know I sound very negative towords the 914, but I actually love these cars. I just don't want you to end up with something you hate in the end when it could have been avoided. For $7000 dollars you can find a nice driver, and that is far less than you would have into rebuilding that car. Heck, today you can barely get a paint job for that. If you rebuilt that car right you would probably have the same ammount of money into it that you could go out and buy yourself a decent 914-6. A truely rare and collectable car that has a real presance in the Porsche world. That car in the add unfortunately looks to be a parts car. Do lots of reasearch before you buy one of these, as they can be huge money pits. I love them, so I stick with them, but others would rather have a more accepted car in Porsches circles, so they weigh their options an usually go the 911 rought if money allows. The car in the add is a $500 car on a good day. I personally would look elsware. Check out the classifieds on this site to get a good idea of what they are going for, and don't rule out having a car shipped from the west coast as it should only be about $1000 for shipping and be saving you untold thousands in repairs and headache. Hope this helps and good luck with what ever you choose to do.
