ok guys i am at a crossroad with the engine do i sell it and get a type 1?

will it fit a 3 rib trans? without mod fictions to the input shaft? and would i need a different starter. i know that i would need the creative car craft tin
what would i need for clutch Question

i know that if i put a type 1 in there i will be running but for how long would a 1600 last if i put a oil cooler and fan on it. i know that i will go slow and get terrible gas mpg but i just want to be up and running and go camping.

i really need your input guys

No offense intended, but I think the question you need to ask is whether this bus is the one you want to save. With a shot engine, and the body not far behind, you are going to be into this for a lot of money if you do it right. For my dollar, I'd consider looking for something that is in better shape and running. It's all about value for money, but then again, I'm probably not as talented as you when it comes to the hands on stuff. Sometimes it seems to me that fixing a rough bus is false economy compared to spending a little more and getting a running, decent bus. Think it through; you'll come to the best answer for your needs. Best of luck whatever you choose to do.

the point of this project was to save a bus that most people would have turned into a parts car,i am good at metal work so there is no problem there. i just want to get it running while i do the metal work

Yes, start with this

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=307829&highlight=early+motor

What you want to do was done by VW in other markets outside the US. You could say get a 1600cc T2 motor like found in a 71 and older bus in a say 77 if you wanted. Its fairly common in the UK and Europe to see a later bus with an early engine from the factory.

And there are several more threads than the one I listed-its a question that gets asked twice-three times a month.

Trust me even though it is a big project, I am very confidant that it is in capable hands. just waiting on my friends welder Cool Just took out the trans today. It's going to take time but it will be worth it in the end, I fell in love with this bus, And i don't want to see it near a junkyard. Right now I took out the interior, sandblasted the rust area's then 2k primer, and taking the brakes off so i can roll it around. I have a bunch of parts on order so it's coming along Very Happy . nothing major yet Sad . The old 49 ford has been getting in the way Cool

so what happened with this engine? did you end up firing it up and getting it installed into the bus so you can move it around while doing your metal work?

today I made some progress fixed a small rust spot(one of many), removed all of the a/c lines and the torn up wiring harness and started undercoating the underside. Anyone know some some good threads of replacing the rear corners and battery trays?
