Don't know i have the free ticket of last year bud i'm working on it with the Van fest organisation to be able to exhange it. I had forgotten it to do it last year, didn't know.

I'll talk to Simon. I'm sure it won't be a problem. You're not the only one who hasn't sent the voucher in.

Doing some sums out loud...
When moving the cab backwards, I need to take the following into account:
(If I keep the deform panel)
Enough clearance for the tyre when the suspension is fully compressed
- the part of the tyre which would come into contact with the back of the deform panel may not necesarily be the very front edge (i.e. inline with the centre of the wheel).
Enough clearacne for the tyre when steering is on any position of lock
- the wheel moves forwards and backwards within the arch!
(If I don't keep the deform panel)
Enough bodywork covering the tyre up front to be legal
Some kind of alternative front bumper if I'm going to remove everything...
I'm looking forward to getting the next donor vehicle (single cab) so I can start physically trying stuff. I do need to be able to bolt the front wheels on though.

Well I've found and bought a donor single cab Syncro. The trip didn't go exactly as planned as this is the second time towing a trailer has seen off one of Limey's gearboxes.
However it was stripped of the parts that the previous owner wanted to keep...
And then strapped down onto a trailer ready for the journey home.
Offloading was a bit simpler at the other end of the journey!
And now it's sitting next to the other donor vehicle waiting for the fun to begin. I need to fix my plasma cutter!
A big thank-you to Sharon for keeping me going with cups of tea and Bacon and Egg sandwiches. Also for pushing the single cab onto the trailer with their Syncro camper... Very entertaining
A big thank-you to my boss for collecting the trailer from my home and taking it to the storage place ...
And the biggest thank-you to my Wife for sorting out getting me recovered when it became clear that I hadn't renewed my breakdown cover like I thought I had!! I'm such a muppet!

It's a shame that the hatch doors are missing from your single cab. I was going to ask about getting one to put a Dai-door on over my kitchen rust.
Very cool project! |

I must comment on the trailer (yes I am a trailer freak) Do any of you guys on the other side of the pond have specs on these ubber cool trailers...that thing looks like it would work great behind a vanagon.
Oh and, killer project. _________________ -Mike

I'll find out the details of the Trailer although a stock van wouldn't fit on it with the boards up, it's only because the front end was on the floor that the back end was high enough to clear the front board.
I managed to get the rear arms off the Single Cab last night. Once I get welding equipment down sound, I can start modifying the rear arms for the 35s.
If I can get the plamsa cutter working this weekend (after I've rebuilt Limey's gearbox!) I'll be bringing that down too and I can start cutting things up.

Do you want me to make you a 6.17 ring and pinion for the Suby Trans? _________________ Reversed gears for Subaru Transmissions

Thanks for the offer but unless you can design and fit a difflock, fit a larger pinion bearing to cope with at least the same torque as the Syncro setup and redesign the gearbox to have a lower gear than first and/or a transfer box... For the same money as a set of 6.17 gearboxes which will do that out of the box?
I'm not sure that the Subaru gearbox would be strong enough with the extra torque transmitted through from a lower ratio final drive and then a lower gear and very large tyres.
Maybe the bigger TY85 would have more chance of taking the abuse?
If you make one, fit it into a Syncro and do some offroading with it, all tested and proven I'll look again

Hmmm...here we go again, I fear...
A lower ratio final drive (higher numerically, e.g. going from 4.57 to 6.17) will decrease, not increase, the torque seen through the gearbox, and everything else before the ring and pinion. Very large tires will of course increase the torque demand everywhere, for the same conditions. A lower gear (higher numerically, if that it what you meant), will decrease the torque on the mainshaft, pinion shaft will not change.

Sorry, forgetting myself. Yes we've been through this. It was a late night
I'd love to see one built and running around. I just don't have the funds to be a guinea pig.

No doubt!
You seem to get more done in a weekend, on each of your three current vehicle projects, than I get done in one month on one project. Those are long days.

My wife has had a few things to say about the amount of time spent on vans atm so I may have to tone it down a little...

I took an hour after work and went up to chop up some of the donor Syncro shell.
This was really just a test to see that I could realistically use my plasma cutter at my friends house.
One diesel battery tray for SyncroPaul....
The pins wouldn't come out of the drop sides and I needed to cut the brackets off anyway so...
The first big piece of bodywork I want to cut off is the back panel but the towbar captive nuts are spinning. I cut some access holes so I can get to them.
I might pop up again tomorrow with the weather being so good.
