200 is ok,porsche removed numbers from guages on 911's cause temps scared customers when they saw 300 deg. 4500 to 5000 rpm no problem,if engine is a B i think redline is 5500! dave griffin

I hope you don't think 300ºF is ok?
I once read in an early 90s Carrera 2 manual that Porsche recommends you never let the oil temp exceed 230ºF.

I've searched a lot for info on oil temp and have read everything from it should be 180-210F to don't be surprised if it gets over 250F on a hot day. I live in Phoenix and my 914 was seeing 260F after a freeway drive home from work on 110+ days. I installed an external cooler and now it never exceeds 230F when the outside temps are over 110F. On cooler days (mid to high 90s) it around 220F when I get home. I'm taking the temp from a dipstick gauge that is pretty accurate. I can say that the car runs a lot better when the oil temp is below 230F. I'm running a 1912cc with dual IDF40s.

The general rule among us turbo guys is 210°F but pushing 230°F is acceptable. Nothing higher than 230°F though.

Assuming a 356 engine is similar enough to a Type 1...

180-210 normal
210-230 hot
230-250 very hot
250+ turn it off

I was a little concerned when I started getting close to 200 , pulling into the center or right lane , at least now I know I can stay in the left lane Smile Smile !

It doesn't matter what the engine is. Oil is oil.
