Here it is...the forum debut of my first BIG bus project. I'm taking a Type 3 hiatus as I need to witness first hand what all the bus hoopla is about...a convert perhaps? I'm sure most of the gurus will remember this SC from the classifieds a couple months back...My SC WTB ad had run it's course and this popped up on theSamba radar and off to Amarillo my dad and I drove. It has decent bones, the mechanicals are crying out, as are the treasure chest floor and bed. Plans are to go through all the moving parts, remove the repaint (It's OG SWR underneath), fix the major rust and, as cliche as it sounds, slam it and roll it on earlies...like my Notch Not looking for show stopper status on this one...just trying to administer CPR and hone my minimal fab skills.
Looking forward to hitting the search button here and hearing your comments...Thanks for looking, Gary

Just make it run and drive...then slowly doll her up. Nice SC, those gates look real good. _________________ In wine there is wisdom , in beer there is freedom , in water there is bacteria !

Congrats! Looks like a great start. I once had a '60 SWR SC- and sold it to help finance my nicer DC. Still hate myself. It was supposed to go on the Samba and disappear- instead, a friend has it so now I get to see every other day. _________________

Thank you all for the comments...I'm looking forward to ripping into this SCAB, but this time of year I become more time challenged and we'll soon be moving out of daylight savings...The truck and I aren't sharing space either due to space constraints here at my house...so, the last time we parted company I grabbed the engine lid, rear apron and gas filler door and have been removing the white paint in my 'spare' time...I'll post some pics here in a day or two.
hitest, Too bad you get to see your old SC so often, but it sounds like you still may get 'right of first refusal' if your friend decides to part with it? _________________

Being the tinkerer that I am...I started to remove some of the white repaint on the gas door and engine lid...not as laborious as I thought it would be. Seems they did a slight scuff of the SWR and shot away...no primer. The church key latch on the gas door was missing it's cover so I wittled one out of stainless and put some engine turning on it...probably give a similar treatment to the engine lid and t-chest door...I've also removed the white paint on the rear apron, but I'm in the process of making a new pocket where the engine lid latches...it was totally roached with rust...stay tuned
On a different note...the engine lid only has one hole that went through it to mount the license plate, kinda like it never had an OG bracket. I dont have a clue what they were thinking on that...

After (almost done):

Those are some great results! Hope you get to knock out more of it sooner than later! I bet it's going to look excellent all stripped down. _________________ -Thomas

I thought I'd post a pic of my M-Plate...Today I tried to show the resident SC rodents that this almost rolling relic belongs to me now and they need to go bother someone else...I vacuumed out the cab and cut out the abortion gas heat heater set-up a PO kluged in...what a mess, pics coming soon.

Great Single Cab, but know that the old dudes will frown and resent you for lowering a relic survivor from their time. If you tried to put gay shoes and make-up on a Vietnam Vet, I don't think that would go over too well -it's the same thing with the truck. Don't listen to the children, do the truck right, respect your elders, your country's history and keep it stock.

I want a red scab so bad
Im partial to red also kanniff...I think SWR tends to get better with age. I hope it's not too trashed under the white....the white has some patina going on, but I need to get down to the red!

Thanks kombisutra...Hopefully I don't step on too many toes. I like them stock, but need to let a few things spill over on this truck...it's just what makes me tick...this truck was dying a slow death and now will get some love...half a loaf beats no loaf IMO.
