I am really interested in speakers, but would like to hear input on radio's too. My radio sits on a shelf up under the dash, so weatherproofing it is not a priority. Anti-theft isn't either as I am not an audiophile. The only people who might be interested in my radio would be the most derelict crackhead and they aren't going to get near enough to get at it anyway.
I need to find speakers, weather-resistant but small enough to fit into corners of the roll cage behind the drivers area. I suppose I could fit any size speakers up under the dash but they would be pointed at the floor and I would think this would muffle them.
Currently, there is a speaker box with four speakers in it residing on the rear seat(nice missile in a wreck) but they are kind of beat up.

If you have side pods the speakers can go on the walls.

Whatever you install, if you don't have a roof and side curtains and you drive at anything over 45 mph, it's just noise. You are better off using an Ipod with ear buds but they are illegal to wear while driving in most states.
I have taken many 5,6, and 7 hour trips by myself in the buggy and I have found no reason to cut up the buggy for speakers. I just listen to the exhaust and watch the scenery.

At one point, I was considering Bazooka-type speakers for my dune buggy (to be mounted on the roll bar), but in the end I decided to go in a different direction. The rear speakers are made into the upper portion of my "back seat", which was thick enough so that I did not have to cut into the body for the speaker recesses.

Another option for the back speakers would be to incorporate them into a kit bag, similar to the one that I made for my 67 Euro Beetle. All speakers are water-resistant, marine-type speakers, purchased from West Marine.

lostinbaja is right to a degree; I can hear my speakers if I am driving, but I would have to turn them up REALLY loud (which I did option for while playing Christmas music for the crowds while participating in a Christmas parade; I wore earplugs because I had the volume up so high). Turning them up that loud also requires you to remember to turn them back down when approaching stop lights, stop signs, unless you want to look/sound like a total idiot.

I have a Boat Wake board speaker under my dash. It holds two 6 1/2 inch speakers and they point straight out to the sides of the buggy. It is driven by a 45 watt amp.

The silver tube with red is the Bazooka speaker box.

It is a little crowded under my hood so excuse the mess.

I also have a set of el cheapo swap meet speakers ( three in each little black box) driven by an old Sony 20 watt amp.
I can hear it fine up to 70 mph as long as my engine has the SuperTrapp on it.
I have a stereo tuner but have my MP3 player plugged into it too.

Didget69, Thank you. That is something I had been thinking about, but had not realized it had been done already. I think my wife has a jeep magazine/catalog around here. I'll look into that. Thanks to all for the input. Bob
On an unrealted note, I just got my initial Special Vehicle Inspection performed and passed, now off to AAA to process paperwork. Papers go to PennDOT and hopefully in about 15 business days I will have license plates!!

I have used this Poly Planer kit with good success. The speakers could be better. I split the wire and added 2 6x9's in my offroad buggy and it is plenty loud.

MP3 plug, 12v outlet come in handy. I use my phone for everything so it is nice and clean.

I still do not know where I am putting speakers in my buggy yet though.

I do not want to cut holes either. More than likely be 1- 6x9 up under the dash and call it good.

Some people use a pair of waterproof speakers up under the dash, in conjunction with a small amplifier & an iPod jack in the dash & carry their tunes in the iPod.

This was my solution to mount exposed front speakers up front and under the dash without having to cut out or modify the fiberglass. Each speaker is mounted in a fabricated piece of metal (approximately 3/32” in thickness) that hang from a flat bar that runs above and parallel to my steering column mount. The flat bar (after being bent with 2 each 90 degree angles at each end) is attached to the bolts that connect the steering column mount to the side brackets that are attached to each side of the buggy body.

Basically, the metal (powdercoated in stipple black to match my steering column) was bent over at 90 degrees at the top, with a cutout of the speakers at the bottom. PVC caps were painted black and used to cover the backs of the speakers themselves. You would think that, looking at the completed photo, the speakers would interfere with feet and leg room, but that is not the case whatsoever.

Very nice. I may have to use that idea. Those look like the poly planers.

Do they have a good sound with the PVC backing. That is the one thing with mine is that they are open in the back and have no bass what so ever. Which is why I added the 6x9's. They get a little scratchy at times as well.

Yes, they are Poly Planers, originally purchased from Boaters World online. I am running 4" speakers in the front, with 5" speakers in the back. The radio/CD is an Alpine (with the Sirius Radio attachment) along with a Clarion APX480M amplifier. Sirius antenna is located on the front of my wakeboard brackets, with the FM antenna (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_12044UA20/Universal-Antenna.html?search=fm+antenna) located on the gas tank up under the hood.

The PVC back cover seems to work as far as helping sound quality and protecting the back of the speakers. For anyone that may decide to take this exact route (or at least with plans to use a 4" speaker with a PVC rear cover), you may want to check out a thread that I started for a speaker enclosure for my 67 Euro Beetle. The mounting screws for my speakers did not exactly match up with the PVC material, so I had to glue in an inner ring of PVC so that the screws had sufficient bite (there is a mistake in my post that it is too late to edit, these speakers are 4" and not 6" in diameter)

Still sorting out where I am putting the..
2- 6" mid bass
2- 5.25" mids
2- 4" coaxil mids
4- 2" horn tweeters (round)
Ill probbably fabricate some fiberglass (kick panel) pods for the mids (inside car)
And if your curious I have a slim four channel amp to run this, the NOS subwoofer is self powered.
