Help identify this VW please.

I'm the poster of the other thread, the car was on craigslist. I looked at it and can announce that it has a new owner, but I am not him. I will post more detailed pics and the full story later today, possibly in the offroad thread I started

I have missed out on classics too in the past by a seller who was flakey or realized what they had, but never got that salty about it. Life ain't always fair.

Want to see more of it first hand? Poke around the split bus forum and it happens time to time, and members whine about it.

Above are 4 pics from the original craigslist ad, posted in Salem Oregon. CL ad said he didn't know what the vehicle was but had an askng price of $500

I don't need or want a dune buggy but did notice the big nut generator on the 36hp engine. Also noticed the 56-59 beetle steering wheel. I called the owner and was hoping to maybe find a treasure trove of parts for my '55 Beetle. I was hoping it would have pre-55 seats, a round voltage reg., a '55 only fuel pump, and maybe some other goodies.

The instant I called the owner, he said the vw was not for sale and he thought he was going to have an auction on the car because of all the interest. We spoke some more, and I shared with the owner my interest in the engine parts only and hope that it might have a few other things for a pre-55 beetle. I also found I only live a few blocks away from the owner and we grew up in small towns only about 5 minutes apart.

He took my number and said he might call me back in the future, after I hung up I was sure it was the last time I would hear from the seller.

I started a thread in the offroad forum, trying to find out why the seller is getting all the action on a scruffy old dune buggy. That thread lead me to this thread started by VWLooseNuts

Some more pics, notice late oval era gas tank installed in rear and late 50's steering wheel. Engine has a few '55 parts but was a late 58 serial number.
Pan has angled heater control so its '56 or newer, still has a roller pedal, and the little thumbs that hold the front mats in place. Also has two bolt wheel cylinders so I'm pretty sure that about narrows the pan down to being '56-58 or so. Seats are '56 and newer style also
