Live and learn I guess. It does make a very stylish and authentic Westfalia hood ornament though. Just don't let the lid blow off. _________________ *****************

Its funny you ask that. I worked on it all day yesterday and have run into a couple snafus. I should really post up pics/questions, but didnt wanna seem too much like a dummy. I'mma recycle a pic for a second, since I'm at work. And don't have access to new ones. SO:
As seen here, the black metal trim surrounds the fridge insert. There are numerous screws around the lip of this metal piece. I figured if you removed those, the metal piece would lift up, allowing you to remove the fridge and power unit. Unfortunately, it appears there is something under the wooden edge that doesnt allow the metal lip to "lift" up. I can't find any screws or bolts that can be removed (although I need to look a little closer). I definately don't want to tear the interior apart to install the fridge, nor do I want to swap this entire cabinet over (its more beat than mine and I'm a sucker for originality) so it basically appears its not quite a straight forward swap I thought it was.
Unrelatedly, where did you buy the parts to redo your propane tank? RV place, or is there a kit available online? _________________ Oppenhiem

Kirk, I can't help you with the fridge, but keep digging; it shouldn't be too hard to get it apart. I have never taken mine apart. As for the propane tank, all parts are original and tested. Everything was cleaned and re-assembled. The only thing new is the paint, and the bolts and washers that hold on the guard. Mine has held up perfectly, and it is such a facelift to the bus. _________________ *****************

Yeah, thats about what I figured. I'm going to get into it more tonight. There are only a few pcs on the propane tank that show wear, one being that little blue cap that screws in, but it may be fairly standard. _________________ Oppenhiem

You can get that stuff at an RV place. My cap was old looking, but I kept it anyway. Got a cover for your regulator? That's the icing on the cake. _________________ *****************

I do not, however (And pardon the crappy pic), my regulator looks different. Must have been replaced at one time? Or were there different ones?

Yours is original. '79 was the only year that had the rectangular one. The round cover is still readily available....lucky you. The shiney tank and yellow bucket brigade club. _________________ *****************

Aren't you so schmart! I haven't seen one at bus depot or go westy, but I haven't really looked for one hard. _________________ Oppenhiem

There are lots out there. Here's an example of one that might work. Enter your regulator number in google and voila:

A little motor-vation for you :
It's interesting to see the variation in color; either from fading or a change of paint color in the manufacturing process. My color is a dead on match and was formulated from a bare spot on one of the feet that had never seen the light of day.

Okay. So I got out in the garage today to install my retractable seatbelts! Yay me. Take some befores, 'cause I like pics of my bus, and I likes my camera.
New stuff going in:
I get the old ones unbolted:
Annnnnnnnnnnnnd realize I cant find my damn "L" brackets to mount these vertically! I mean no where can I find them. NOWHERE. Pissed. So, searching around, I found these. Thoughts?

Anyone know what size bolt that is that holds the seatbelt in? Trying to see if these will work. I HATE to start a project and not have everything I need. _________________ Oppenhiem

funny you should mention seat belts, I have some I need to install as well, and haven't yet, because I too do not have the L Bracket, will be interested to find out if these work for you. On the other hand some heavy duty stuff from the hardware store will prolly work too, nothing inherently special about that L bracket, but I could be wrong... _________________ 1987 Wolfram Gray 2WD Vanagon GL Westy (1.8T Powered!)

I would almost swear I got those from Go Westy. I bought them for my first mod on my first sage green westy, which was replaced by this one due to severe rust issues. When I sold that bus, I put these in the garage and just stumbled across them yesterday. I'll take pics of the installation, but its pretty straightforward.

Nope, other than it needs to be pretty strong steel or you are just wasting time. I could cut some steel I have laying around and make some, but I'd rather order some that are already done and not have to wonder if my brackets will hold. _________________ Oppenhiem
