|

'74 Sedan pan. I also put this post in my build thread and thought it may do some good over here in the off-road forum. Sorry if I'm breaking the rules (Mods do what you must).
Here are a couple of pics from me reindexing the rear end. 8MM serrated end wrench for the cv bolts.
The first pic shows the most the trailing arm will droop. Disconnecting the break line gave me enough clearance to get the springplate off of the stop. (I did end up removing the trailing arm to get the springplate back into position.)
After getting the spingplate off of the stop, I scribed a line to show the stock position.
Here's the difference after going down one outer spline. (before compressing and putting it back on the plate stop.)

Hibbard says to line up the bottom of the springplate with the bottom of the lower bolt hole for max lift on an IRS car.
did you check for that? _________________ 73 Beetle, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 1776, Solex 34 Pict-3, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

That's how I did mine, mainly because I forgot to scribe a line at the stock location when I pulled the first bar. It worked out ok, though. A lot of clunk at first but it settled in nicely.
The whole thing was surprisingly easy. I should have done it years ago.
This should be one of the first mods for the new baja owner. _________________ Remember, kids------> KCR Transmissions SUCKS |

No I did not! I just went one outer notch... I'll check it when i do the other side . It should go faster than this one. I'll try to take more pics. _________________ "Keep up the good work. You used the term craftsmanship. Don't you mean "craftsman$#&*?" "

Same for me, was on the stops at first but has relaxed and settled with 1/4-1/2 an inch to spare. it ended up being 1 inner spline on each side. _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle 1600dp Class 11 Look-alike....SOLD !

Yup. Stayed on the stop for a few weeks. Reindexed again to get off the stops. Wore out the bars and installed another stock set. Wore those out and installed 26mm short bars. Been running those for awhile now.
I found it easier to measure the lift I wanted and then use the reindex chart to figure out how many innies and outies I needed to get there. |

I didn't get finished with the passenger side last night. Wife said it was too late for me to be banging and verbally persuading things to go where they should. I am interested to see how much "give" it's going to have. That baby has some pressure on it! Motor, body, etc. will make some difference...hopefully. _________________ "Keep up the good work. Reindexed the passenger side last night... One outer notch down lowered the springplate to cover the top 1/3 of the bottom rear torsion bar cover bolt hole. make sense? _________________ "Keep up the good work. You used the term craftsmanship. Don't you mean "craftsman$#&*?" "

I don't have a copy with me, but my ancient memory says that Hibbard said:
cover 1/2 of that hole for max reasonable lift on a swingarm
cover all of that hole for max lift on an IRS
making me think that 1 inner spline would cover the hole. of course, there is no rule that you have to go for the max lift or do what Hibbard says _________________ 73 Beetle, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 1776, Solex 34 Pict-3, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

I have always used one outer on my cars and make sure they are even. Once the car is back on the ground it give you little down travel and seems to work well. _________________ “It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.”

Now that the springplates are resting on the stops, the shocks (Firestone Gas Charged Radial Master?) will no longer mount. They're too short. So, I guess I'll go ahead and ask for shock suggestions while I'm at it... Class 11 style/look-a-like. 25 miles a day road driven...occassional dirt road/pasture. Flame on. _________________ "Keep up the good work. You used the term craftsmanship. Don't you mean "craftsman$#&*?" "

It sounds like they were already too short. Every time you get full extension coming of a bump, you've probably been topping them out.
I was going top notch my plates while I had them out but the stock shock will only take about 1/4" more extension and I didn't feel like upgrading. _________________ Remember, kids------> KCR Transmissions SUCKS |

Yeah, see, I've never driven it. I got this '74...
as part of a package deal when my Pop bought this '67...
This is my '69...
NOW pay attention. I apologize now if I offend anyone. The body of the '67 is going on the '69 pan (I'll explain later). The '69 body is going on the '74 pan. So we have a '67 pan and a '74 body leftover...Baja it?
I got the bug for bugs about 2.5 years ago. Well, Pop was a bug guy back in the late 60's /early 70's. So after buying the '69 (read my rebuild thread if you want details) and needing a motor, Pop wanted to get involved with the restoration/rebuilding the motor. So he got the pan/motor to work on and I went to work on the body. Long story short...His talent/time/budget far exceeded mine...there was no way I (or he..but he won't admit it) wanted my 1st time body work going on the '69 pan,now totally restored, sporting a 2332 and a brand new tranny. ( I'll get details of that build together one day). He wanted, and I think needed, an IRS pan so he kept the '69 pan and I got the '69 body (I'd put alot of time in it by this point). He was looking for an older body and I was fine having a swingarm rear (I wanted a stockish look then). Then I found the '67/'74 package deal... So now he's restoring the '67 body and I'm now going for the Class 11 look. _________________ "Keep up the good work. You used the term craftsmanship. Don't you mean "craftsman$#&*?" "

Drill new holes in the lower cups. This is what I did when I notched the spring plates:

Well, that's....actually a pretty elegant solution. Nice job.
You could even grind the end off and get another inch of ground clearance. _________________ Remember, kids------> KCR Transmissions SUCKS |
