That picture was taken some time ago. Just got the bus out of storrage (7 years) and it is worse.
Will try and post a better picture. |
try rotating your rubber spring plate bushings 180 degrees. they compress over time and make the rear end sag a bit. not a particularly fun job, and you don't know exactly where the bus will sit until you reassemble everything and drive it back and forth a bit. _________________ .

One reason fro this found: Gas pedal wire was loose so it didn't open throttle all the way.
I tightened it a bit and now it's much better, weak of course but no need to change gear to 3rd in hills (unless very steep and long) and pulls a steady 50mph against the wind. Of course when empty, full load is another matter. _________________ Kharon -- '63 typ14, '61 typ2, '65 typ34

I think the RGB whine is an inherent feature, (straight cut gears) no real solution _________________ '57 Vert-bamboo

Straight cut gears will always whine to some extent. Good quality gear oil helps, but the whine will always be there. _________________

| I noticed that not replacing your freshair vent seal or the vent window seals seems to reduce audible RGB whine. |

| I can now join this thread (soon enough). My bus is at the shop, getting put back to stock and should be finished tomorrow. Good bye straight axle, good bye scraping steering box, good bye people behind me flipping me off cause I barely can make it over a speed bump. Hello new horizons! Here we go
After ringing maybe 10 different tire shops, I found these tires for my Kombi.
Initially I was planning to get a set of the bias ply Firestones, but the cost and also the availability of these in Australia made me change my mind.
I got a set of these Bridgestones 195 R15 with 692mm OD.
The thread and the smooth sidewalls look a lot similiar to the old photos we see from the original tires on the R15 kombis. Also it is a LT (light Truck) rated 8 ply tire with reinforced sidewalls, so appropriate for the kombi rather than normal passenger car tires we see a lot in Kombis these days.
Been a Radial from a good brand (Bridgestone), and paying aprox 55% what a set of the Coker Firestones would cost me, I am happy with the results.

Good looking tires. A quick search tells me they are not available in the US. How much did they cost you? _________________

They look similar to these, which are very similar to a set that I have on my Toyota pickup. Good load rating, decent tread wear, poor wet condition traction. I can get stuck on wet grass if I'm not careful. Ok in the rain on pavement, though.

|
|
Is this where I would ask a question about tire size? Assuming so, what I have is a stock '67 Crew Cab. I'm planning on putting some Old Speed front disc brakes on it and at the same time, I'm changing to some Flat4 BRM replicas I already have.
My question is what is the biggest tire I can fit on those rims under the stock rear wheel wells? I will probably use one size smaller in the front.
Thanks in advance.

Probably a 205/75R15, but with the beetle offset that BRM's typically come with, you may run into clearance issues with your inner wheel well in the rear. See if your local tire shop can mount up a test tire for a test fit before purchase. You may be able to go taller, but likely not much wider than that. _________________
