In my "built" thread on thesamba you can see the surprising discovery of logos/writing on my bus. I figured to put a few picks here as well.
These logos were applied first when the bus arrived in Los Angeles 1959 and the previous owner who bought the bus in 63 had no idea about this (he believed it was a stock dove blue bus).
I will preserve the writing!
Here you go:
The business was :
TRUCK WHEEL BALANCING
AT - THE - JOB - ON - THE - TRUCK
a mobile balancing service with Electronic equipment I guess
If you wish to see how I figure out the logos and what I'll do to preserve them, you can follow here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=494322&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
If you have any ideas/experience with logos, please post them. Right now the biggest challenge will be to figure out which colors they used. Ultra-violet light might help to activate some residue paint (whoever painted the bus blue sanded of the lettering - I know from the sanding strokes). |

I live in Watertown, WI. Been here 47 years! I've never heard of this company, and have never seen this bus.

When I got this SC from my good brother Chris (commercialair) there were three sets of logos with spraypaint between them so the new sign painter could start anew.
I thought it an impossible task to be able to strip off the top logos and leave the originals intact.
I bought another set of gates to run on the truck as the originals were both beat and ugly as all get out with the various sections of logos showing through.
The end gate had been run over a couple times. The soap dish was completely flattened and the gate was warped pretty good.
I decided I would try to strip the late (like 1970) logos off so I could at least use the gate as wall art.
Attacking the newer logos with nothing but a dull razor blade and infinite patience yielded surprising results. Once the logos were revealed,
I got out the hammer and dolly and welder and coaxed the gate back into some semblance of its' former self.
Primed by my success with the end gate, I took a deep breath and plunged into the revelation of the logos on the side gates.
Not only is there about 3 times the surface area to scrape off, I found the yellow lettering on the side gates was more fragile than the white on the rear.
I got some paint colour matched and did some touch up on the logos where my finesse with the blade was a little lacking.
I estimate I have about 70 hours into the gates altogether, but now that I am done, I'm real pleased at the resurrection of the original logos.
Then
Now

Nice mostly OG paint, 1959 Logo panel from Portland, OR.
Pretty cool logos and very thick Sealing Wax Red paint.
