During the 80's I kept a VW Trends in my back pocket. I was able to build a "Callook" 64 by 1987. It was one of only a few in the area. People still talk about my "Bugs" (had many...still do). The right coast lagged behind the left coast as far as VW....trends. Dare to be different. Most of the cars and people I hung out with moved on to....yes to the "mini trucks" and Mustangs. I held strong with no a/c and crappy heat. My last one (last year) I reconditioned, a 1967, I call it the CaroCally look. Its a combo of a few things... Strong 80's influence of course. | I appreciate whole-heartedly how lucky we are today especially when I think of where all those Samurais and mini-trucks wound up? Where did alot of 80s bugs end up besides the crusher??? At least from what I experienced, I bought 3 bugs and a bus (all 80s survivors) during the mid-90s from Central American immigrants. In each case I was always shocked to see how much they loved what they called vochos. I know its not easy for people today to give any immigrant credit for anything especially in Arizona but i believe many more bugs go to the crusher if not for those immigrants. I still have my 62 bug 15 years later because I promised a salvadoran man who needed money and was forced to sell his beloved vochito that i would take care of his baby. What about all the wierd shit that was being done to VDUBs in the early to mid 90s. What would have happened to those bugs when those trends died out. Maybe more bugs would have ended up at the crusher. We've got to give mega credit to the few clubs that stuck with it thru the lean times and true to their looks. From the magazine articles ive read, DKP and German Folks deserve the brunt of that credit. They stood true to their respective looks that still inspire today. Their were times when i felt like a lone ranger past my time whenever i would get into my bug and would floor it just to amuse myself by the sound of the Webers and dual Thunderbirds. I still do. As a matter of fact I did earlier today (chk out the entire video). Anybody who grew up in L.A. in the 80s know the dual packs were a necessity.

I remember Radical Rag and Suicide Solution and all the other logo'd VW's in East LA. Those were great times for the LA VW aircooled scene. I got to see them all cruising, steet racing, house partys. I was in the thick of it working for VW parts retailers like Jerry's VW heaven, Unique Performance-Latest Rage, building motors for them and for many local racers in Huntington Park, South Gate, Bell area of LA. I have been out of the scene for a bit but I hope to finish my 57 Ragtop soon & a 1955 beveled door vert project ......can't wait to hit the streets and cruise again!!

VOLKSWAGNUT thanks for the input. This was not intended to be a 80s/90s Custom or Cal-look thread though. I was trying to reach out to a specific generation that grew up in L.A. somewhere between 1982-1988. We attended high schools like Roosevelt, Garfield, Manual Arts, Jeff, H.P., Bell etc. and we hung out at some of the same venues (Tommys on Rampart, The Casa, Don Quixote ie DQs, Stadium Way etc.) The VDubs that we called Cal-Style and the party scene back then was unreal. That is what almost everyone drove back then, but the VDub scene as we knew it was 99% dead by 1989 though. Everyone it seemed was moving on to so many different things. I moved on to updating older Porsches others moved on to GSXRs, Samurais, IROCs, 510s, Mini Trucks and some of the best I knew sadly wound up dead or in prison. I always kept a Vdub of some sort around but it was no match to the rush and the tookie I could get driving my updated 3.2L Cabriolet. |
Nice, I remember all that and more having Graduated from Franklin High school in 86` in the heart of it all Highland park. That was my stomping ground even tho I had friends from all over, Lincoln hights, El Serino , Cypress park and beyond!
I was lucky enough to watch all those cars back then and be part of it too. I am now in the process of resurrecting a car from back in those days that was very popular around East LA. Every now and then I still get somebody asking if I remember them from back then (Much older now) and start talking about who they knew and all the time we probably had the same friends. | A couple of popular rides that I wonder if they are rotting in some back yard under a tree needing to be revived are Radical Rag and Suicide Solution. I remember being a 10th grader in 1983 at Roosevelt and during lunch by the exercise yard a bug (Suicide Solution) was cruising down the street and out of nowhere just popped a big ass wheelie . Radical Rag was a sweet looking bug. It was always parked outside a little market on Main and 54street during the mid 80s.. |

And I thought I was the only one on Samba in these modern times who still reminiscence those days.. This is one of those Vochos that was rolling around back then that I have now and will once again roll the same streets blasting that Old school house party mix.

Im just swiming in heaven reading all these 80's stories and pictures. I got out of high school in 82, traded my motorcycle for a 57 Chevy 396. Took a junked 69 Charger and restored it. Then the Charger got totaled, a guy offered me cash for the 57 and I was car-less.
I grew up in Huntington Beach California and went to Huntington Beach high. While in auto shop, I helped a friend rebuild his 1500 single port, that got me hooked on bugs. The Cal Look style was raging and through a friend of a friend, I met this guy who took his 68 bug and used it as his class project to graduate auto body school. His father bought him a new car to go to college in, so he sold me the bug for 800.
It was completely de-chromed, Rossi turn signals, black out rubber, baby turbo mirrors, single piece glass, and an adjustable front end. Oh yeah, it was painted Porsche India Red.
The engine was a stock 1600 single port, which I swapped out for dual ports, 09, Dual baby Weber 36's, and a stinger.
I drove that car for years in the 80's, cruised Angelo's in Anahiem, Long Beach, Hollywood, Whittier, the works.
My neighbor bought a new Firebird and installed a double 15 sound box in his trunk. A month later I cobbled together a sound system for my bug of the same design.
I feel so lucky to grow up in HB, drive a slammed Cal Bug, and enjoy the scene. |

A guy PMd me asking why its not a cal look thread. This thread is about an entirely different scene. This thread is about what took place in the streets of L.A, ELA and some of SGV and it revolved around the L.A. party scene of the 80s. It would be disrespectful to call it a cal-look thread and im sure the cal-look police wouldnt appreciate it especially since our cars were different. Thats not to say there werent any calloookers in L.A. because there were. Im not going to claim to have been in the middle of the V-DUb scene either because i wasnt. I was in the middle of the L.A. party scene of the 80s and we drove v-dubs, lots and lots of v-dubs. Playing american legion ball and city ball in the mid-80s it was also obvious to me that the the V-dubs from the south bay, lakewood, long beach, orange county, la mirada etc were different then what you would see around the L.A. city schools. i started this thread because everytime I read magazine stories of the 70s cal-look , the friends, the schools I reminisced about our scene, our bugs, our friends our schools and of course our spots. Our scene never got documented. I dont even think we thought much of our scene, we just knew it was fun and it was nothing more than everyday life. No one was coming into latino neighborhoods to document a bunch of teenagers in bugs chasing the happening spots. That was reserved for the lowrider culture. They made movies and plays of that stuff. The terms resto-custom, cal-resto, resto this, resto that didnt exist back then. I went to 3 different high schools in the L.A. area and the term most frequently used was Cal-Style. Every neighborhood had its own players, a slightly different lingo but by nightfall it seemed like our entire generation converged onto what seemed to be the same spots and stay out till 3 or 4 in the morning. It seems unreal and probably wouldnt fly today. I re-read this thread and realized only 5 other people actually lived this experience, EA57RHD, ALLWAGONS, VWKIDD, TWIN WINDOWS, FUELRAGS. Where is everybody??? _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. I still have some OG parts on my bug from that place. Time flies but those good parts last forever. Check this out, I was dumping and shredding documents a couple of weeks ago and i ran into a reciept from this old man that used to sell from a stash of old volkswagen parts out of his house just n/o riverside drive behind dodger stadium. So instead of just dumping the whole stack of old papers in the trash like I normally do I started digging thru the stack of old love letters and reciepts and i found a picture of a 52 bug I had in 85. I was blown away. The only reason i took those pictures was cause i was replacing the wrecked clips and I was perplexed that it didnt have a split dash. I dug around for days looking for welds and cuts and nothing. It looked like a pretty damn good job. About 15 years ago I learned about this one word: Zwitter... So you never know, you might one day find some pics of Tommys without even trying. Ps. Kidd, Did you ever get chased by or hear of devil worshipers late, late at night in Elysian Park? _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. | I still got Hot VW's and VW Trends magazines from the 80's, I also had mini trucks, and hot rods. I used to take my bug around Mulholland and all over. You used to park on the street and hang out and look at everyones rides. Back then bugs were like snow flakes, not one was the same. I went to every Bug In in the 80's, It was a great time. |

The clubs were always jam-packed to capacity in those days that the bigger party definetely spilled out into the parking lots and streets. We used to kick back and watch Vdubs gun-out all-night long and we would sit their and be able call out who was running dellortos, webers, kadrons, s&s, t-birds. Good times for sure. _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school.
