On my '74 the wiring where the headlight switch is just sitting there not attached to anything.

I bought a replacement switch today and went to read the wiring diagram and the 74 diagram makes zero sence to me at all. I just finally understood the 72 diagram and this is totally different to what I am used to.

On the back of the headlight switch (The Rocker type switch) is labeled as 30, 30, 56 (looks to be a copper and the other are brass) also 58, and 58b (which 58b is smaller than the others for some reason)

The wiring that is hanging there where the headlight switch is, Solid Red, solid Grey, Black w/ Yellow stripe, White w/ Black stripe, 2 White w/ 2 red stripes and these are spliced together with one going to the Speedo and the other looks like it goes down to the fuse box maybe?

None of the existing wires that go to the headlight switch has that tiny female connector that would go to 58b small male connector.

Thank you all in advance for your help.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Solid Red - 30
solid Grey - 58
White w/ Black stripe - 56
2 White w/ 2 red stripes 58b

Black w/ Yellow stripe - should go to terminal X
But if the switch doesnt have one it will be ok to leave off but you will need to insulate it well as it;s live whenever the ignition is on.

Don't stress about the narrow terminal, the bigger wire connecter will slip over it just make sure its not a loose fit, crimp the to prongs down abit more if it is.
Its for the dash lights and isn't fused.

Even more confusing, why do they spit it up like that?

What is confusing me is the whole change of wiring diagram. It does not make any sence at all to me. I have been looking at it for about 3 hours and I am still lost.

Can someone please tell which wires just plug in to the switch?

Thank you Hank for that site, I did not know about it.

I just did Wink

Yes that later schematic style diagrams are a PITA to read, especially when they scatter over onto several pages.

Thank you Joel.

What is the Black W/Yellow stripe wire for? Just wondering that's all.

Another thing, on the back of the Switch there are 2 30 connectors, connected together. Is that extra connector able to be used for something else?

I am going to install my stereo here in the next few day's and was wondering if I could use the extra 30 for the lighting of the stereo or something else? I was wondering about my Tachometer, could I use that also off that plug with a piggyback splitter so the Tach lights up?

Normally what happens is the parkers work all the time but the headlights only work when the ignition is turned on.

The red 30 is constant power for parkers and dash lights and the black/yellow is power for headlights when the ignition is on and goes out when cranking.
But it sounds like it may be a universal switch which doesn't have that provision.

Extra 30 terminal is for the clock which goes in the square next to the headlight switch.

It has power all the time, so not much use for things which only need ignition power.
It also isn't fused either.

Is the tach got normal globes or LEDs?
normal globes you can connect it to the 58b so it dims with the rheostat
but LEDs dont like voltage drop so connect to the 58 terminal.

Thanks once again.

Hmm, I do not have that hole for the clock you speak of. Guess I will not use that extra #30 then.

My Tach does have regular bulbs so I will connect it to 58b.

Also what are these "parkers" you speak of?

http://www.oldvolkshome.com/headlight_switch_OVH.pdf

"parkers" are down under lingo for "parking lights".

The '73-later wiring diagrams are DIFFERENT but it has some advantages over the earlier diagrams. Its biggest strength is it breaks out each switch separately AND shows the internal contacts. The earlier diagram was literally "plug the red wire into the #30 terminal". The newer diagram allows you to see that when the switch is ON, the #30 terminal is connected to the #58 (output) terminal. You can see how current will flow through the circuit.
The down side is you cannot place WHERE things are located around the car. The "fuse box" isn't illustrated. Each fuse is shown separately powering its devices. Some are up top near the main power sources. Others (like headlights) are lower in the diagram. This does illustrate that a good portion of the headlight circuit is NOT fused. But for someone not familiar with the components, you wouldn't realize that the turn signal switch and the headlight dimmer switch were part of the same component.
In some ways the way the earlier diagram located things that were near each other together made wiring difficult. Take the ignition switch, horn button and turn signal switch. In the earlier diagram you could not tell which terminals were for which as they were all in a circle around the horn. The later diagram separates these into individual items with the numbered terminals grouped together.

I makes use of BOTH diagrams when troubleshooting.

Yeah sorry, parking lights, city lights, running lights, side markers, everyone seems to have a different name for them.

If you don't have a clock there isnt a hole there but there is a cut out so you know what to remove if you fit one.

Its the big square beside the light switch.

Thanks again guys.

Another question, do I need to have the seatbelt/brake light hooked up? It seem's that they are a combined unit.

Also if I do not want the seat belt warning light, do I just unplug it at the base of the seat where the wires plug into?
