Just saw it on Live with Kelly. Just a concept but will most likely appear 2014, This was an electric model but comes in diesel and tdi. They said that this was a kickback to the microbus. Allegedly VW is serious about getting something along this line back into the American Lifestyle.
personally I didn't like it but would be interesting to see a camper version. _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

I'm pretty sure this is what you saw - The Bulli concept:
I actually like it. I think styling wise it captures a lot of the charm of the split window vans. But it isn't really big enough to be interesting to VW van owners.
It's a rehash of the 2003 Microbus concept that VW never built.
This one is big enough and at the time they even showed a pop top camper version and a double cab pickup version.
If VW could apply the updated lines of the Bulli concept to a van the size of the Microbus they would probably have a winner. Not as cool as a real bus since it isn't a cab-over design, but a whole lot cooler than a regular mini van.
There is quite a bit of speculation that VW will build something soon along these lines to replace the Routan. It would be built in the new Chattanooga Tennessee plant to make it affordable for the US market. This suggests it would be built on the Passat platform rather than the Transporter platform, but that would be fine.
And yes it would have the clean diesel 2.0 TDI as one of the engines and probably a 2.0TSI gas engine for the other.

Yeah, but that choice was made by the previous management at VW that included some ex-Daimler Chrysler personnel. The current management is not only very competent, but also focused on making products that are affordable and appealing to the US market. I think they'll take advantage of this opportunity to bring back an icon that only VW could build.

Is this VW's belated response to the PT Cruiser?
Oogh!

Something weird about that photo. It's as if those vehicles were photoshopped into that landscape. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

While it's true the bay window is still produced in Brazil, it won't ever come to the US again. There's no way that van could meet the current DOT safety regulations. Car and Driver did do an article on that van recently, but it was just to show what old models were still being produced elsewhere. I think the rumor you heard was started by someone reading that and concluding that it was headed here.
There are private imports of it going to England and Germany though.

More like a companion vehicle to the 21st Century Beetle. And since VW did the retro New Beetle before Chrysler ever thought of doing the PT Cruiser, I think it would be incorrect to insinuate that VW is copying a (unsuccessful) Chrysler product.
These retro van designs from VW may not appeal to everyone, but I like the fact that they are pursuing vehicles in this mold once again.

Here are a few more photos of the previous Microbus concept.
Different color scheme:
The camper version:
I think there may be some hope of seeing something like these, but updated to fit the current styling shown by the Bulli concept. The fact that VW called the new one shown last year "The Bulli" suggests they are saving the Microbus name for a bigger version intended for this market. The small Bulli is really intended more for the european market.
Or I may be wrong, and they just didn't use the Microbus name again since it was already used in the 2001 concept.

I thought "Bulli" was a real name while "microbus" is american slang.
Either way I have owned many "new" VW's. I have been very disappointed and will prolly never own anything newer than MKII again. Everything introduced to the American market is watered down and has proved expensive (for me) to keep on the road.
Still waiting for real Syncro "bus" to come stateside. _________________ 1987 Wolfsburg T25 still riding out. A bunch of other VW's passed on... |

I would drive this one with a diesel. Sweet. The Bulli looks cool but doesn't look very spacious for camping, working, or anything but people hauling. The Diesel Bulli maybe could replace our Jetta but not the Vanagon.
If VW truly intends to become the Number 1 auto manufacturer in the world, I would hope they would offer a more diverse range of vehicles in the US like they do in other major markets. _________________ Tim Potts

The fellow doing the presentation this morning on Live With Kelly appears several times a year introducing many new automobile models for the next year or two. Before he exposed it (slid the sheet off) he said it was related to the former "Microbus from the 60's. I jumped out of my chair ran into the living room and that's what I saw (the first pic in this thread). Such disappointment. I suppose I'll always be stuck in the past I've always liked my vehicle with hard lines, squared off sorta, always.
Do you think that if they really do incorporate an old concept in a modern version which will undoubtedly be expensive, that it will increase the value of well cared for "vintage" vehicles? I'm not sure it is the same as the modern Bug vs the original Beetles, or is it? _________________ '09 2.5L Jetta 5 cylinder, 5 spd, super turbo, see thread in H2O Cooled Jetta, etc...

The Bulli is old news. I've said it a bunch, but I'll say it again: Forget the Bulli, forget the Routan... give me the California.
