Here is want I have done to the trailer sense my last post.

I did not go with cutting into the rim. The machine shop said it could break later down the road. I didn't want to risk losing the rim and have to deal with trying to replace it and getting it re-painted to match my bug.

I went with a little smaller bearing and used a bushing to fill in the gap. I still went with a sealed heavy duty machine bearing. These bearings are rated at 1800Lbs each. A little over kill, but it's done forever (I hope).

I used 4 - 1 3/4"OD X 3/4"ID X 1/2" bearings
and a 2"OD X 1 3/4" ID bearing bushing. The machine shop had to cut the bushing down to the correct width space between the bearings and shave 1/8" off of the bushing. My rim has a 1 15/16" ID. That gave me a total of 1" of bearing on each side just like the grease fill cup and cone type bearing

I then mounted the tire to the rim and installed it to the fork. I should be putting the bottom of the trailer back together soon.

Wow that's looking sweet!! I had thought about those same lights but I still don't know if I want to start cutting holes in the trailer, now that I see them on yours I might just go for it!! right now I have A single 1951 Chevy panel truck light in the center,, It looks good but I git A little scared that someones not going to see it, That would suck bad!! the bearings are A very nice up grade!!

Thanks VW hank. Not sure how I would have approached it if the holes weren't there. I really love the way they came out. And in my mind the trailer was made for VW, because most of the cars from this era had trunks big enought to fit the trailer in. So why not use VW tail lights. I have been told they look like there OEM to the trailer from freinds of mine.

Here is a bearing I'm going to try out.

When I took my trailer apart to restore it, the trailer had two small home made flat sheet metal washers to help the wheel fork swivel on the base of the trailer bed. I thought that I would try and find something better. So I went back to the same place that I bought the wheel bearings. I told him that I was looking for a lazy Susan or bar stool type bearing with a hollow center and he came out with these thrust needle roller bearings. And I couldn't believe how much weight they could handle (about 10 times the load rate of the trailer). Again a little over kill, but for $5 how could you not try them Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy . I'll let everyone know how they work out.

Yes very nice, pleas let us know haw that bearing works out(pics of install would be grate Very Happy ) I got A 2nd trailer for $100 just for the wheel Laughing hay I wanted A spear.. I had to scrap the frame and body(should have saved the frame and put A box on it Rolling Eyes ) It was rusted very bad!! half the body was gone.. so I have A extra fork assembly that I want to clean up and have on hand for the hell of it, maby that would be A good candidate for that bearing set up Cool

Its funny that you say the trailer was made for the bug,, I always say VW redesigned the bug in 1968 just for the trailer!! Really! the 1968-73 bug rear bumper has holes in the exact spot thy need to be to bolt the "U" bracket under the bumper,, and that's not even the good part, The bumper brackets both have A tab that gos to that hole. So all you got to do is bolt them on and hock up the wires and go Very Happy Very Happy no clamps, no drilling, no bs Very Happy

Here is what I did to the trailer today.

I installed the fork assembly and the front arms. The thrust needle roller bearings seem to work great. Only time will tell. Next - wiring up the lights

Now I know what your thinking, The bearings are to small. But remember these bearings are used in heavy duty construction equipment. There rated at 1,800 Lbs work load and will fail at around 9,000 Lbs. I thinks they can handle what I'll put in the trailer.

The fork is attached to the base really good and swivels perfect. It doesn't wobble or anything. Let see what happens with a load in it traveling down the freeway.

Lookin nice, and coming right along. Wish I was that far along.

I would think that with a bearing in the swivel, you would want a little tension as to prevent woble. Moving to freely may not be a good thing, not in my experience at least with forks on power wheel chairs, usualy end up putting a little pressure on them as to prevent excess movement. Just a thought. And as mentioned earlier in this thread, trailer angle will also help prevent wobble, make sure the front of the trailer is at least a little bit below the rear to make the fork want to trail instead of lead. Let us know how that all works, I like your ways of improving them.

If you could, post part numbers of the bearings, and spacers, and swivel bearing and washers. So others can possibly follow your lead, thats what I started this thread for.

Keep up the good work and make sure to post up a finished product.

No problems with that trailer still. Many many miles later I am told.


...just another idea. That's why I made sure I got the Timken part number in the photo as well.

55reasons - I checked out the link you attached. Very nice trailer. The swivel part of your trailer looks a lot different then most I've seen.

vintagevwnut - Here's some more info on the type of bearing I used for the fork and the swivel base.

I used a thicker washer on the bottom, because the axle fork had a slite curve where the axle and bearing meet.

I also was able to finish up the wiring. Everything works great. Just need to finish up the wiring plug for the car.

I also got a great idea from a fellow single wheel trailer owner. To cover the tail light and brake light wiring, use a bug wire cover. The plastic one that go's under the hood. It fits perfect and I didn't have to modify it at all.

I also had the bed and the undercarriage Line X, because I had the whole trailer powder blasted. But before I had the trailer Line X I put in some 1/2" EMT pipe to hold and protect the wiring. I bent the pipe to fit the curve of the bed. I then used a two part epoxy to hold it in place and they just sprayed the Line X over it, Now I don't have to worry about things getting snagged on the wiring.

Here are some picks of the finished product. Also note the two small wheel's attached to the front arm's of the trailer. It make moving the trailer around a lot easyier.
