I understand that completely. I just thought of those couple of things.

It looks like you will have a major event clash nearby already. I know that the above is in 2011, but you can bet it will be the same weekend in 2013. BNNNTA is a major draw in the Midwest.

I like the idea of a "national" show. Fall is best, since the weather is usually best at that time of year. The hard part is folks with kids may not be able to attend due to school schedules. Can't win 'em all I suppose.

Maybe you can go for a minor holiday instead, like Columbus Day. Most kids have that day off, I think banks and post offices (and my company) have the day off. Of course, it's harder for people who drive long distances to take extra time off then, but the same holds for Labor Day, many kids are back in school before that. Maybe something like the 3rd weekend of August would be better?

I don't want to be Mr. Negativity, but I just don't see how starting something from scratch is suddenly going to be a new de-facto national event, when big shows that have been around for a decade or more are still mostly a regional draw. And most people are well served by regional meets, I'm not entirely sure large numbers of people will travel across the country for something new. You might have a better draw if this was not an annual event, but every other year or something. Makes it more special that way. But at any rate, I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks nerfer, I don't mind any so called negativity anyway, I like hearing from both points of view. I know both sides of the country are served by regional events and that's fine. I am thinking more along the lines of international but making it more accessible to both sides of the country here at the same time. People drive from east to west and west to easy but making it centrally located so that its more convenient to all would be good. And the fact that it being planned as an event that would take place over at least a four day period makes it even more flexible for folks to participate. It's all in the initial planning stages at this time anyway, theres a lot of strategic planning to be done for something like this to happen. I am looking into fairgrounds right now that would offer a lot of amenities including camping, attractions and entertainment.

the every 2nd year or so is an excellent idea.

re kids and school:

it might be possible to sell the teacher on the idea if homework could be taken along, or if the kids could give a talk on what, where and why presentation like a show and tell afterwards. School years run from August thru end of June pretty well in North America. I think that Schools can/could be approached re 2 to 4or 5 days off as long as the child is learning something. I know that here in Canada special trips, etc... can be arranged with homework assignments given before time.

Also could consider having it in association with an already annual event IF there was the space or could be near one shortly before or after.

just throwing out ideas out there.

My daughter is in first grade, and my wife is a teacher. I'm screwed! Very Happy

What you propose is common. Families take a long trip and get some curriculum from the teachers to work on during the trip, often tying the subject of that trip into the work.

Unfortunately, that won't work for my wife. She cannot take time off during the school year. On the flip side, she has little interest in VW shows, beyond kicking my ass out the door when show weekend comes around. Wink

This event could be very cool. I would do my best to attend. I love road trips.

this "national show" would have to be a monster event. the likes of which have never been seen among VW enthusiasts. it would require a large corporate. sponsorship. I'm thinking VWoA? ??

Most of the VW folks in my part of the country must be far worse off then others.

Many of them have cars that have difficulty trying to drive 1-1/2 hours to a local show, let alone half way across the country.

Then there is the other thing of just trying to find enough cash to fill the gas tank.

So I think out of the 500 to 1,000 mid atlantic VW people, you might get 2 or 3 to come.

There is a reason they are messing with rusty old VW's in place of Porsches.

Maybe you should think about a travelling show. One big show that goes to a different part of the country each year. Maybe us poor east coasters would have to wait 2 years, but eventually the show would come to us.

to Glenn: I see your point. VW has no time for us airheads. yet it would be a great way to show off the new vws, given the show were big enough. to Dr scope : that's not a bad idea!

This may be a good opportunity for the BIG show to kick off.

Get in touch with the Race to The Future group who wants to build a new raceway. Let them know that you are ready and willing to bring this show to their new facility.

It may be just the boost they need to show investors, banks, and the public that it is a viable and valuable idea and an asset to their community.

There is usually a LOT of resistence from locals when a racetrack of any kind is proposed. And having spent time near several I fully understand.

They bring in a lot of traffic and bad elements. And the noise is simply mind numbing.

The noise never bothered me while at the track, but working in the shop a mile away while cars were on course is just a never ending irritating drone that goes on all day all weekend. I wouldn't want to live there!

So any proposed race track can use as much positive support as they can get. If they can show the community they have a full schedule of planned events before they even break ground, it really helps in their dealings with the municiple planners.

And the more they can show they will have outside money coming into the community, the better chance they have of getting it done.

We've been doing this with the Type 3 Invasion for the last 10 years. It's location started on the west coast (Parma Idaho), then went to the east coast (Hershey PA), then the west (Oregon) then the northeastern edge of the midwest (Ypsi Michigan), then the southern midwest (Carthage MO), and this year it'll be in Colorado Springs Colorado. I've personally been to 3 of these, and am planning to go to this years event (been building a car just to take to it). Shocked

It started out as a group of like minded people who wanted to put faces to screen names, and has continued since. It's held every 2 years (so you can get your car together, and save some cash), so it gives everyone time in between. Will it ever be as large as the Classic? No! But we get 30 to 40 cars, and 60 or more participants to show up. We have a "pre-Invasion BBQ", then a free day to exlore, then a day show/gathering, followed by a dinner, then a gathering the next day. It's a very laid back event, and a NON-judged car show, with a silent auction, minimal parts swap, tech sessions, and a lot of BSing going on. So far we've also given well over 3K to Ronald McDonald House, as it's the offical charity. Cool As it turns out, we do get quite a few Samba members attending.

drscope is right on spot here ^.

Lots (not all) of the East coast cars are "patina'd" way out. Some are lucky to make it to events without loosing fenders.
Id love to make a national trip. We travel to Fairmont Indiana's "James Dean Festilval" every few years, granted yet to take the trip in a cramped VW Beelte, (drive a 51 Merc). I hate to say Id probably have to trailer a Beetle for a trip to Kansas with a family. By myself Id drive. If my Double Cab was on the road, it would free up the room with family in tow. As much as we hate to admit it a Beetle is made for shorter trips. Not that it wouldnt make a long trip, but the fact older cars are slower and driver fatiguing cars. That means extra stops, and extra money for those stops.

Coordinating regional groups to caravan together, would help ease the lone wolf drive.

I would try to make an annual "National Show" trip, but in reality probably would have to only go every few years. If its still around.

The traveling show is a good idea, but most likely the same participants of the regular regional/local events are the ones who will attend. The ones who would have to travel long distanceses would then know the "traveling" show will be in thier area eventually. This would take the "specialness" out of an actual national event.

Better to roll em' how you want and wear em' out.... then let em' rot out.
It's more about the going --- not the showing.

yet for some strange reason thousands of bikers invade sturgis every year. Daytona too. some trailer the bikes, some ride them. some ride the ride every year! from everywhere! I think its the "spirit" of making the trip that's appealing to them. "just because" right? why not the same type of gathering for us VW lovers? of would be a kind of "volkswagen mecca"

Yep the bikers from across North America go to Port Dover, Ontario everytime there is a Friday the 13th, regardless of the weather. This year they get a treat 3 Fri the 13th and they are 13 weeks apart!

I just want to say that I think a good positive letter to V of A and even perhaps Canada "might" be received favorably. Never know without asking.

I think keeping the event every 2nd year in the same local is the preferred agenda. That lets people plan ahead and especially because not all VW are a moving motel Wink Laughing so with that in mind, there would have to be a place for trailers to be parked as well as any tow vehicles. just a thought

Most of those bikes at Sturgis easily cost 10, 20 or even 100 times more then a lot of our VW’s.

What that tells you is they are NOT the bad ass bikers they want you to think they are. Many of them are professional people who do the Sturgis run in order to have that one time a year when they can be viewed as a bad ass.

When they go back home, they put on their respectable cloths and go back to their high paying job in the corporate world.

The VW crowd is mostly struggling folks who are just hoping their ride will make it to the show and at least half way back home.

So you can’t really compare the Sturgis Bikers with the VW crowd. Many of the VW folks play with these cars because they can’t really afford something better. If they could, they would be going to the Porsche Parade each year – or Sturgis!

Wow -- just...WOW. I don't know where you came to that conclusion but it is proof positive you're either attending some ghetto shows or you've never attended one.

If they can smell money they might care lots. A local VW dealership was at a VW show last year and there was maybe 100 cars there. I'm assuming they're mistakenly going after brand loyalty. A show drawing thousands and thousands like this could have VWoA sh*ting dollar signs especially if they can try to sell some of the newer models there.

That being said, if this is properly pulled off it could easily shut down whatever town we invade. I mean for the most part the VW crowd is a real easy, laid back group of people so I can't see it being a big deal but there's still going to beed to be a Police and Paramedic presence there. The town that's picked is going top have to have this pitched to them so they also sh*t dollar signs also or I can't see this getting off the ground

I'm with Gary on this one. Most of the folks that go to the shows I go to are doing pretty damn good and the VW's are a side hobby.
