My van happens to have the EGR system removed right now.
So there's a hole in the exhaust system just before the catalytic converter and it's creating quite a bit of racket.

Until I get the EGR system back in order I'd like to put a temporary plug or cover on the hole to limit the noise.

Anyone have any thoughts?
I thought I'd ask for ideas before trying to tackle it myself.

I know it gets quite hot down there so that limits my options.

Thanks!

a large radiator hose clamp will work, just something to keep the piece of metal in place

Whatever you do, don't use that epoxy stuff you can buy at you flaps to repair exhaust leaks. I tried it and it almost killed me with the smell. It also cracked and fell off.

I made a block off plate and used the existing bolts and gasket. Are the bolts still attached to the heat exchanger?

Nah, it seems the system broke off and the whole interface down there is all rusted over.

You might get away with using permatex copper silicone in place of the gasket and then make a bracket.

So you'd need a seal in addition to the metal?

If you don't then you will likely have an exhaust leak. Are you in a location where you will be smogged? Are you sure that the EGR valve is sealed at the air distributor, this will cause a vacuum leak of it is not. If you don't need the EGR it would be better to block off the place on the exhaust and make a plate for where the EGR attaches to the air distributor.

Yep It's blocked off a the air dist. It's blocked by the valve that seems to be frozen in place, both the valve itself and the hex screws holding it in place. I'm hoping I won't need to remove it anytime soon.

As for the exhaust end I used a clamp and just some aluminum foil to cover the hole.

It defiantly has reduced the noise.

my van became really loud today on the way to work, almost as if someone took the cat off my westy Sad Have meetings tonight and hope to pull it in a dry greenhouse at work tomm to take a look at it. So yeah, might need some expertise on the situation.

BTW I have seen a few links to exploded diagrams of the systems on the Vans. Does anyone have a handy link to a 1986 Watercooled exhaust system? The Haynes didn't have much and the Bentley is not with me right now.

Thanks guys

Try the Bus Boys site, crude but effective:

You'll need to scroll down the left hand menu.
