Vagon has been fixed. The verdict, champion plugs fouled, while alternator belt (self install) loosened up over time and was not charging the battery no more. Cranks fine. Rides fine. I need new swaybar bushings. Where can I get those? Usual suspects?

One of my friends has offered to rebuild my motor. He has done several VW H4, before, but he usually does Pontiac and Ford motors.. Since he is hearing a rod knock he suggested that we drop the engine, inspect the heads, and then tear into the bottom end, machine the crank, new bearings to match, and get the head machined, new pistons, rings, etc, etc.. a rebuild..

Is there a kit, or two you can buy that will get you most of these parts? Question

Thanks,

Why does the air blow even when air is set to 0? It's driving me nuts. Shocked

Are you talking about the dash vents?

Also did find the person who did this:

That looks like $1k or more to fix.

Yeah, the dash vents are blowing even on 0.

Unrelated to air blowing out of the dash:

It has come time to rebuild the engine.

I'm staying with the original aircooled motor. However, I have read on this board about the following conversion with my slight twist... Think less heat in mind..

+ Brand new cast cylinders and Pistons

+ Improved AMC casting of '78 year cylinder head with high quality stainless valves, 3 angle valve seats and ground keepers from German Supply -- square port

+ '73 Exhaust headers without heat exchanger, these will directly bolt on to my new exhaust. (if i can find them)

+ Performance Web Cam with Web Lifters

+ Bigger oil cooler tapped and threaded onto the block where stock oil cooler used to sit, with a cooler fan attached to it.

My rebuild budget is $3000, including hands.

If you have a better idea, please let me know. We will begin the tear down on Wednesday, and I will be video and photo blogging about it.

You want to keep the heat exchangers they provide extra cooling for the motor. Stay with hydraulic heads and lifters.

I already have mechanical lifters... so.. the next option is.. Camper Special with their Camper Special cam, which exceeds my rebuild budget... But budgets are meant to be exceeded, otherwise you loose them, right gang? Laughing

It will take some time to get the CS kit so if you are not in and can afford it that is the ultimate non conversion way to go. Before you get too far into this...how complete and properly working is the fuel injection, cooling tin etc. These engines do not run well with anything amiss. You need to factor those extraneous expenses into the cost if you want this to be reliable. Check out this place also for parts like the heads, cam etc.

My cooling thermostat is broke, but everything else is in order at the moment. I love the fuel injection, and its dead simple, however since I live in a state that does not require emission testing it is very hard to come by equipment to measure exhaust, and get the computer fine-tuned.

I don't mind going down the CS Head + Cam, and waiting. I want to do this once, and have this thing be reliable for next 30 years. This unfortunately will include the removal of fuel injection, and going to the carbs, due to the cost, and ease of getting them tuned by any competent mechanic. One less thing to worry about....

cold start valves, temperature sensors, flow sensors, airbox, vacuum hoses, fuel pressure regulators, and chinese fuel pumps.. buh bye Wink

Very Happy I'm almost done with engine replacement, but I am missing a few parts...

I'd like to get a new starter; some have recommended "national parts store" due to unlimited warranty on their starters -- but tho wants to replace one of those every time it pukes?

I also need the thermostat. There was a gentleman on this site who sold them, but I can't find his posts.. help Smile

Clarks corvair may have a thermostat you can modify to work if you can't find one here.

http://www.corvair.com/user-cgi/main

Too bad you are not closer I wouldn't mind getting a hold of the engine for a core to rebuild. Keep us posted.

Use a Wix filter when you fill it with oil.

Too bad you are not closer to me, I have wanted to get a core for a while to start an engine build.

I like the pictures and look forward to reading how it runs.

I would live to brag that the van started with the first turn of the key, but that was not the case. We had some doubts on two relays (fuel pump), and it was a 50-50 chance... It was roll the dice moment, and we should've proably refered to previous pictures, and the manul.. We swapped the connectors, and what do you know. The first official start, and she started purring right up. It took a while for air to displace from the valves, and they were clattering for about 30 seconds....

Video of the "first" cough, second start.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35aVlxyIJkA
