Welcome to spring / summer camping everyone!! A few people in the Connecticut / New England area have been talking about meeting up for some food / drinks/ and fun this summer. Looking for any and all VW people who would like to attend. The location is Guilford and Madison, CT near New Haven. Here is the scoop....
We would all meet in the early evening or earlier depending on peoples sechdules....Eating as a group at The Place and any who choose can camp afterwards...
The Place (since 1971)
The Place Restaurant is a truly unusual restaurant where visitors dine outdoors while a crackling wood fire roasts savory clams, smoky lobsters, sweet corn and much more. Instead of chairs, tree stumps encircle bright red tables, decorated with a bottle of freshly cut flowers. One large menu towers over the dining area, allowing all to see their options as smiling waitstaff come to take their order*.

After the event some may choose to follow me to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison....10 min away....and camp overnight at the campground..We may call ahead to see if we can reserve an area for the busses/bugs etc.....Dont know how many people will respond to this post but we would like to start planning... here is the info on Hammonasset

Could'nt the "Gathering" be on July 21-24 at Seaside Park in Bridgeport?

Frank - I spoke of that (GOTV) too.. Still could have the event that day with a meet up / prep / idea feast in advance of Time machines (meaning a different earlier weekend) - Still working the details but I still feel that time machines is cool and local idea. Sucky about the Vibes and date cross over. Still gotta speak with Jon - I don't think we can ever have a perfect date - but we can try. Its all about the fun! _________________ Nothin left to do....

we are still working it out
so its looking like an after labor day thing
weekend or just sat?
There is a walmart across the street so camping is covered near by!
any one else have thoughts?
We could do it as an evening or overnight or ?
We were thinking of a swap at the meet up too - bring extra bus stuff and trade with others.

I'm hoping we can do this in the next 3 weekends?
I'm unsure of the places actual closing and right now I'm thinking a Saturday late afternoon (4pm) meet up. Depending on the interest it could be a few VW (BUS or otherwise aircooled) people or as big as The Place its self with a swap meet.
I Will check With John and The Place.
Please post if you think you can show up and eat and talk VW and if you like Saturday or Sunday. Remember BYOB and anything else you may like to bring to eat - the menu is Seafood heavy with ribeye and chicken and corn. Did I mention the corn?
Feel free to PM me as well.
Thanks - We have had some "issues"a rise in making this event happen in a timely manner. Issues beyond our control not Place or VW related. _________________ Nothin left to do....

well with 2 weekends left for the THE PLACE to still be open I'm thinking for 2011 this is a no go. Mostly due to unforeseen and issues beyond or control, not VW or location related. I'm hoping to make some thing work in the 2012 season. Sorry to get everyone's hopes up in 2011. I'd like to target JUNE 2012 for this event and try to get a feeling about it at the CT Fathers day show. Thus putting it after mid JUNE but before July 4th holiday. We shall see... _________________ Nothin left to do....

Steve
We ran into the same problem last year as the Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport is the same weekend JULY 19 - 22, 2012.
I saw John there (started the thread) and I know someone else in the thread expressed the same concern - that said - I am thinking of targeting the JUNE 23rd weekend or at least that Saturday.
As I am typing this it is mid November and I have not locked anything yet.
I think this weekend is good because it will be after the CT show and its before July 4th weekend. But that's just me.
More to come...
We are still confirming about the camping part of this event - but for know I'm thinking a daytime run around with some pics by the water and then food at the place and then if we can camp cool if not we depart... There is a wal mart across the street from the place. _________________ Nothin left to do....

...Yes, I promise I'll make a point to get a photo-op *AT THE PLACE* the next time I'm out...

I made it out to The Place just a little while ago today (a little before noon on Saturday, January 7, 2012), and shot a couple of pictures of my Bug sitting there at the corner.
There is a snow fence encircling it completely right now, so that you can't drive into their property, per se. It was apparently converted to an off-season Christmas tree sales place--and now it's just kind of sitting in the aftermath of all that action.
Anyway, will check back in with a couple of photos later on, once I get 'em out of my camera...
Stock Steve
P.S.: Positively gorgeous day out there today--hope you can all get your old VW out for some pleasure driving today, if possible... _________________ Stock Steve

It was a very balmy Saturday in Guilford, CT, January 7th, 2011, when I drove "Doug" the '60 Bug over to THE PLACE for a couple of photo-ops.
Interesting to see what it looks like during the "off season"--kind of sad, given the aftermath of what appears to have been Christmas tree sales--now long since over. Looking forward to another season...
Standing on the other side of the road, looking kind of northwest toward "The Place." My '60 Bug is sitting on the corner of the little roadway that The Place shares with some kind of bank or something, to its east:
Looking mostly west, with some of the westbound Route 1 traffic visible:
Looking mostly east, out by the road again:
Parked down the little access road to show a bit of the backyard scene at The Place (snow fence precludes actually driving into their back yard):
Looking into their back yard again. Sure looks a lot different than the bustling summer scene when The Place is busy serving great seafood. Looks like a large greehouse way in the background (probably not visible when the leaves are on the trees):

Finally, to "whet your appetite," The Place's big menu board:

Thank goodness server space doesn't get taken up with non-VW-related images... https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/63738.jpg ... I'm just sayin'... _________________ Stock Steve

Steve thanks
Yeah I knew they used for xmas trees in the winter time.
Stony creek is a great place too. Any near by camping?
I used to go the creek all the time in the summer for the quarries.
I'm still hoping to try for the time between the first ct (fathers day show) and July 4th to make it happen.
But always open to new ideas on location and date.
Earlier in "summer" the better as time always seem to fill up after JULY.
I know a bunch of peeps me included it the gathering of the vibes which in 2012 is July 19-22 _________________ Nothin left to do....

Hi sneakyjack,
Thanks for the followup. It was a fun project/excuse to go out for a ride in the old Bug (even though Big Brother stepped in with some image editing).
I am not aware of any campgrounds, per se, in the Stony Creek area. There are lots of land trust trails and preserves, but I do not think camping is permitted.
Let's see, between Father's Day and July 4th--I am looking at the CT VW Association's events page - http://www.ctvwa.org/index1.php?center=center/showlocations.html - and it doesn't appear they're doing anything specific in that date range either (though there are a couple of earlier-season events in there that you might wish to be aware of).
Gathering Of The Vibes--I've never been to it, though a few of my co-workers have--sounds like one serious shindig! Have fun if you go!
Best regards,
Steve from Stony Creek _________________ Stock Steve
