Get rid of your dial-up. Smile

Picture heavy because a picture is worth a thousand words. You can study the manual all day but until you get off the ass and do it the manual is just a manual.

Changed the subject line for ya bentleboy.

I get off my ass to get the needed work done. And I do all the work on mine since I don't want anyone else touching them. But I don't post pictures as to how, when, why, and how often I sneeze or take a dump.

But that was considerate to put the warning up. And no, I don't use dial up. Wink

Hey, I resemble that remark. Wink

DBM - mostly good photos on this thread, not the all-too-often "Look everyone I have a rusty Bus, tin snips and box of carpenter's glue!!"

Me being a metal rookie I like seeing all the detailed photos of quality metalwork. Keep it up!

Dessert, just shootin at ya man. I see a lot of your post here in the Bay section and you have good advise. I have seen your photos and you got some good looking clean rides. I like this site and no I don't refer to the manual much and I'm sure most on here don't either. I think the majority just ask the question and expect to tune back in and find an answer. Most of us are take it a part and see how it's put together kind of individuals. I guess it's a guy thing.

I like watching/reading the rebuild post, like mine. If you watch close you can pick up on some tricks of the trade that only have been tried and found true. Am I the best or is this the best way, Hell No, I like doing my own work and knowing that if it messes up it's my fault and I like sharing what I've done with others. My dad couldn't hardly drive a nail so I wanted to be different than he. I think I have seperated myself from him, God rest his soul.

This is a hobby for me. I have a regular job and this is like an escape. I wish I had a bigger shop but my heighborhood covenants wont allow a larger structure nor cars sitting around.

Saying you don't sleep with a Robert Bentley book under your pillow is grounds for blasphemy here.

The nice thing about these threads is you can look at them or not.

A couple times I've started to look at this thread. But never have because I just hit the STOP button after a short while. There is a massive amount of pictures and way too many to sit around and wait for them all to load. Whatever all the extreme photo coverage is about it must be good.

Wow guys, why not just get back to the topic that this thread was about. I didn't intend to disrupt it but just commented on how I couldn't even see what it was all about because it pretty much overwhelms my old PC and DSL since page 1 is so photo heavy.
If it's discussing topics that are covered in the manual then naturally I'd suggest that you turn to the manual as your source of information. If it's not in the manual and folks know how to do it with helpful good quality work then yes, words and pics are the way to go.
The addition to the topic title was the good move and a great way to do it. Wink

When topics are covered in the manual, and the choice is to ignore that and barge ahead blind attempting to be smarter than VW was, then that's a different issue. I don't care if people waste their time and money but it's the bus that takes the beating.

More work today, back to the topic of this thread.

Started with the drivers side wheel well. Rusted just like the Passenger side. So the repair is similar so I skipped much of the details. Here are a few pics....
Drivers wheel well...

Removed most of the rust and made a patch....

Welded it all up and then ground all the welds....

One other area of work that was completed is the drivers floor....

Then I cut in the ribs...

Did one other rib but didn't get a pic. Here is the finished floor, welded and ground.....

The list is getting smaller, can't wait to start sanding and priming.

Welder bottle is empty so I decided to go ahead and strip the silver stuff off the roof and pillars.

What ever this silver stuff is it allowed some rust to form under neath it and this Bus was inside. It all has to come off, can't take that chance.

What did you use to remove the paint from your roof.

First it is sprayed with "Aircraft Stripper" Klean-Strip brand in an aerosol. I tried the Rust-oleum, Mar-Hyde brands, stay the freak away from these. Both create a dust cloud that is breath taking. The Rust-oleum is just like the spray paint it gets on everything and it don't take shit off nothing. The Mar-Hyde brand is a little better but has a strong ammonia smell and takes a couple applications for good results. The Klean-Strip is not so smellie but don't get it on the tender parts of your skin it will burn. Do not spray this stuff outside with any wind, you don't want it on ya.

Klean-Strip works and the OG paint comes right off but it is a little tougher than the silver stuff, the stripper will bubble the paint and next I use a 4" wide razor scrapper....

I have a smaller single blade razor scrapper that I use on the tighter and tougher spots.

Awsome!

I used Mar-Hyde and it wild the fumes and smoke that built up in my small shop. I will try to find the same as you used. Looks great so far you give me hope for my project that I have begun.

How did you get the indents back on your floor after you welded in a piece of blank metal?

I have a '71 Parts Bus that is giving up pieces as I need them. I cut a section out of the floor of the '71 and then welded into place.

And thanks for looking, glad that I could inspire. That is what The Samba should be about.

As for the stripper check your local O'Riley's Autoparts if you have those in your area.

Lots going on with this Bus.

I received my battery tray last Friday and Sat I dove in and installed it. I don't care to do another one, cramped space and I don't like lying on my back welding above my head.

Start....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I cut the main part of the tray out and then reduced it to slices.....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I used a drill w/bit to drill out the spot welds. Then used pliers to bend it back and forth to break it loose.

I test fit the tray....

Figured out where and how it would be welded in. I like to go with the spot weld type welds. But under neath I just did a conventional weld that held the lip and the corner, seems very strong now. I'll sand it and use some seam sealer to seal up the gaps.

I had to massage the new tray some but it fit nice enough for me. For $29 bucks what do ya expect?

1/31 - 2/1/2012
Worked on the cargo floor 1/31....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
Welded in the third patch for the seat hold section. One more to do and call them done!

Started on this area tonight 2/1, looked like this....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then I cut out a section...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Made a patch that I cut from a parts Bus and carefully cut out the area to match the patch. Fits very nice. Will weld it in tomorrow night.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.
I did cut out to much along the lip but I'll put in a backer and weld it up.

I've gotta do a battery tray on my 75... toying with the idea of building a tray for it to bolt to instead of welding it in, so I can plasti-dip it and remove it for cleaning

I'm glad I don't have to do anything like that on my bus, but I will second that emotion. It is nice to watch good work come together like a well crafted jigsaw puzzle.
