For that motor, she won't need a Mende. A built 091 box would do it. _________________ '67 Sunroof

I haven't seen Ray since dyno day and we've got to get my bus on the road, so no updates on jetting the engine, or my trans...
But in the meantime, there's been an update to our coastal cruise. Only half the people could make the 3rd day in Monterey, so we've changed the itinerary.
Hwy 1 Cruise and Mark Merrill's VW Museum tour (private collection) Feb 4/5 - Bay Area, CA
We will be cruising cars from Auburn/Sacramento to San Jose on FEB 4, Saturday, museum for tour and lunch. Join us along the way or meet up there. Afterwards, we are going over to Half Moon Bay to stay at the Comfort Inn Saturday night (less expensive). Sunday morning, we will cruise down Hwy 1 to Santa Cruz for lunch, go through the redwoods and back home Sunday night, Feb 5.
JOIN US for this great opportunity to see the museum and enjoy Hwy 1, the more the merrier! Please RSVP: I MUST have a head count for the museum, no crashers. _________________ Dawn

We are coming directly down I-80 from Ray's shop in Auburn. Leaving about 9-9:30am, so should be passing through Sacto from 10-10:30am. It depends on the RSVP's that I get and the locations they are coming from. We will probably pick an exit off I-80 that is central for the Sac people to meet us and join in. Can you come!? Anyone that can make it, please PM me. If you can't come, please spread the word/FB/etc. _________________ Dawn

Thanks for the bump Bill. We have about a dozen confirmed. Mark LOVES to show off this private collection and can take more. Don't miss this opportunity! If you can't cruise with us, you can meet us for the museum only, but need to RSVP.
Any suggestions on PR? I don't want to put it on Events and get overwhelmed with drop ins. But maybe a forum post under a new heading? I hate to think there are Bay Area folks that would love this opportunity and just aren't aware since they aren't subscribed to my build thread...
Come on and add a little (actually a lot) of VW's to your Superbowl weekend! _________________ Dawn

Okay, we have 10-15 people as of now and I'm organizing where to connect in Sacto on the way. Considering the Starbucks at Madison Ave around 9:45am. We will be at Mark Merrill's around 1pm. We'll be cruising slow to accomodate a couple Type 2's with RGB's.
Disneymike, I pm'd you, can you join us? _________________ Dawn

Quick update on Hugo. Ray never stops. He spends his nights dreaming about making things better. Gets up and goes to get coffee and read the dyno report-- over and over... Ruminating.
The float on the left carb stuck open once and geysered gas like a fountain. It happened while I was giving it throttle behind the car, so I witnessed it. No guarantee that it's not happened while driving to a lesser degree.
We added a shutoff switch to the electric fuel pump. Hugo's OLD motor that is going in my bus Velvet (has dual 40 Webers) will get the same treatment.
Here's Ray's email about it:
"Electric fuel pumps: The best way to start is with the pump off, then you turn it on, after the motor starts, the vibration of the motor running stops the sticking thing that can happen and flooding. Then you turn the fuel pump off, before you turn the motor off. This stops gas from leaking from the carb from heat build up when sitting warm. I did it with all my race cars, works very well. And very safe. All dual carb motors run the risk of this, even Velvet. We will look in to that on her as well, because Velvet with the gas tank so high could fill the whole motor full of gas then bend or break shit when you go to start her. We need a check valve in line (liquids do not compress) so if she is full of gas and you turn her on she will be locked up then bad crap happens.... Just sayin'. With stock buses this has happened. You have to pull all the plugs, then crank it over, AFTER you have drained all gas out of the crank case and put new oil in. P.S. The motor will idle for along time with out the pump on. So there no hurry to turn motor off after the pump is off."
Most importantly we changed the emulsions to F11 and jets are now: .60mm idles, 1.45mm mains, 2.00 air. Hugo is running much smoother with this setup. The carbs have accel pump leakage issues too, but we don't have time to deal with it yet before our weekend cruise. Adding a return spring to them has improved it greatly, not even noticeable, but still leaks. Art Thraen (ACE) has been providing some help and Ray has ideas on what he will be doing later and I'll update. In the meantime, the car is running the best since we started it, READY for our trip tomorrow!
Here's a few teasers with pics from the VW museum. Again folks, this is not open to the public, join us if you want to see it tomorrow!

good to see you are using the F11s. I think it will make more power with 150-155 mains, 145s are probably a touch on the lean side of the power curve.
If the leakage problem persists send them to ACE, they are the best on IDAs as far as I'm concerned. _________________ Please do NOT send me Private Messages through the Samba PM System (I will not see them). Send me an e-mail to john at aircooled dot net

I did the same thing to my speedster. The left carb has this "leak" or drip after you turn it off even with the float levels setup correctly. I am wondering if this is the "Spanish Weber porous casting drip"?
The garage will then smell like a gas station...so I installed a on/off switch and I turn the electric pump off and let the engine idle for about 3-5 minutes and now there is no more smell and flooding/hard starting when warm. Works great. I think the residual pressure makes a lot of the gas piss out when you turn off the motor. |

Anyone want to meet for dinner in Half Moon Bay with our group. Or meet in Santa Cruz or lunch in Felton. Or join us last minute at the museum tomorrow. PM me. I will get them on my phone on the trip. _________________ Dawn
