25kg from memory, but it's not enough to make any noticable difference.
Mine certainly doesnt handle any different.
the joy of being a boxer motor, my rotary bug was far more twitchy in corners. |

I raised the turbo psi from stock of 9psi to 19psi, which i believe is in the neighborhood of 100hp gain.... 1psi = 10hp - so Ive read. If this is accurate, I think it would be just under 400hp, and it is a handful to drive!!! I think it would be too much power to AutoX with though... Not sure, never done it. |
I'm fairly new to the Subie world (I've had a modified 04 WRX for about a year now), and I'm not hip on all the variants of the EJ motors but 400 hp is probably pretty optimistic. No offense intended at all, just saying My WRX is running 19 psi and is just under 300hp and has the supporting mods (which are all on external, nothing but intake and exhaust). And if anything in the neighborhood of 300hp in a WRX is fun I can't even imagine the fun that could be had in a Beetle
The car is sweet Thomas, I had first seen pics of it right before you swapped in the Subie motor. Was already in love with the car, love it even more now. Had I not gone out and bought a Subaru, I would have probably coughed up the cash to get my POS Subie powered. And by probably, I mean if I hadn't proceeded to get married and buy a house right after buying a WRX (and still not even old enough to legally drink) I would DEFINITELY have put an EJ20 in the engine bay of my bug by now
Once I can swing it though, I'll be using your thread as guidance. The motor looks soooo clean. Made me drop my plans of using a tuned stock ECU immediately! I think I'm going to start with a setup like yours and turbo it. No offense to people who suggest it, but I don't think I'll waste my time spending $$$ on and STi motor. Shit, a stock NA Subaru motor in my bug would make me happy though _________________ 69 Beetle - broken down

UPDATE!
Sorry it's taken so long. It's just a combination of coming up with finances, changing my plans for the engine, and spending family time through the holidays. But its getting done, slowly but surely.
First, making the best of my new, very space-limited workspace in the antique garage at our new place:
Honing the cylinders:
Shortblock all done, and looking cleaner than ever:
I must have forgotten to take pics of the longblock, but here it is during the construction of the high capacity oil pan:
And one cool little side note, I sprayed some paint remover onto my mesh wheels. All of the 90s black spraypaint came off, and most of the 80s red paint also came off, to reveal the original 70s gold anodizing! I can't wait to hit them with another round of paint remover, and get the rest of the remaining paint off!

Thanks man, me neither! It's killing me to see all this rain outside, and not have my Bug out there. Between the welded diff and the street slicks, this thing is going to be an uncontrollable drift monster. And that REALLY makes me want to drive it! haha
Zach, thanks for the compliments! If you have any questions about the conversion when you get to that point, be sure and shoot me a PM. _________________ -Thomas

Got a little bit more done... hoping to finish the oil pan tomorrow night.
And here's a little eye candy that is in Jeff's shop right now:
It's a MK2 GTI with a B18 Honda engine in it. Jeff did all the work in making it fit, which involved welding in motor mounts, working out the clutch and shifter linkages, and coming up with a wheel bearing that would allow the Honda axles to fit into the Golf spindles. He also welded up that stainless turbo header from scratch. If anyone wants more information about it, here's a thread about the Honda Golf:

Oil pan setup is awesome, no added baffling needed.
Looks like I'll be borrowing that idea.
What's the deal with engine swaps in Cali? Don't you guys have to sacrifice your first born
Ticket wise when they pull you over due to non stock non carb certified modifications? _________________ '59 1500sp Ra Jay

Thomas, quick question, did you get the heads and deck resurfaced by chance?
Don't know if you are going with a stock gasket or cometic but that seems to be something strongly recommended with these motors as the spec is some where around .004 difference. _________________ '59 1500sp Ra Jay

No, I didn't. Since the engine didn't overheat, I'm betting on the heads being pretty flat. And I am just using the stock head gaskets that came with my kit. They were good enough for the first 140,000 miles, so I am sure they'll be good for a few more. Especially since I plan on keeping the boost fairly low. 180-200hp max.
I have a small update from this week. My new water pump came in, so I got it installed and started on the timing belt. But when I went to install the water outlet, I discovered that my new oil pan goes directly into the path of the water line! Dammit, I should have had the water pump in place when I was planning out the oil pan.
So now I need to decide which way to solve that problem. I think there's room above the pan to run the water line, especially if I run a hard line. I would rather do that than chop material out of the oil pan. But I want to be able to pull the pan off without disconnecting the water line. I'll figure something out...
Here's some pictures:

Hi,
There is a thermostat housing cover that points in a different direction.
See: Subaruboxers thread on aussieveedubbers.com
(you have to join to see the pictures)
I don't know if it will solve your problem, but it might be something to look at. _________________ homepage

That's actually an EJ20/EJ25 DOHC thermostat housing you got on there.
Stock EJ22 faces out the side but even that looks like your header is in the way of
