Installed a new Bugpack merged header and quiet pack muffler after doing a valve adjustment and replacing the heater boxes. The air cleaner, intake system, and carb were tuned pretty good (along with minor cyl head smoothing), but the exhaust was the biggest remaining bottleneck. When the exhaust is opened up, the AF ratio leans out more as the RPM goes up, so my idle jets were fine, I had to bump the mains up from 132.5 to 135, and I still have to step down the air jets to fatten up the top end. But, it is hugely quiet: It sounds like the engine dies when you coast up to a light, but the tach stays at a steady 900rpm. The car ran good before (16's in the 1/4), but has more torque now until the carb leans out. I'll get that sorted out ASAP, but the only place here with jets is closed for the weekend.

Opened up the tranny to fix mismatched shift fork and R&P backlash. Of course I had a little help from Al's Kraut Car Repair. _________________ Foss.

It is absurd to divide people into good and bad.
People are either charming or tedious. |

Finished removing all the hardware, wiring, dashtop, both lids, and about ready to remove the convertable top, bolt/weld in braces for support, and remove the body from the frame, and on the dolly frame. _________________ 70 Karmann Ghia Vert. |

| It is between Pampas and Oriole. Its the paint we had so I didn't have to buy anything. Maybe best of both. |

Worked on a couple minor things like the sticking visor pivot and the poor-fitting repro interior light. Then we took a drive!
This winter has worked out well for keeping our Ghia on the road because each snow has been followed by warmth and rain to wash the salt off the roads. It almost seems like make-up time for not being able to drive it during the summer. Today we went for what was supposed to be a short drive, stopped for snacks, and went a little way before I was ready to go back home. I had our handicapped son with me, and as I got ready to head back home, he looked at me and tapped his fingertip on the seat, which means that he wanted to stay in the car. I smiled back at him with a tear in my eye and said, "Sure, we'll keep driving". He sat back and gazed at the farms and horses while I enjoyed the spring-like weather and sunshine. 50mph was just right, and with the window open an inch for the fresh air, the engine seemed almost silent as we cruised through the countryside and around the curves. And then I realized that, if this is where a lot of miles went, it was well worth it...

|
|
I ve been hunting a convertible guia that i could afford for year's, finally i came across one,a 1958 vert guia, in very decent shape this will be my long awaited dream car restoration, i was actually looking for a 68 but when i came across this one i instantly fell in love. I will try to attach the original ad from craigslist.
here is the way i saw what i bought,
pros: 58 guia vert, pretty much rust free, motor and tranny are very clean, not much body work needed to be completed, polished porsche rims in very good shape. top frame is in great condition, most light and emblems are there.
cons: front end was changed from a 71, no bumpers, no gas tank (don't know if i need a 71 or 58 tank), no windshield, only got the 2 seats from the interior. iam new to the vw world. |

Welcome to the GHIA world...if you're going to be searching for parts it will be easier if you make sure you have the spelling correct in the first place
A '58 Ghia is the first year of manufacture for the convertible and potentially the most valuable of all the Ghias. You need to think very carefully how you are going to restore this much sought after model. Post up a new topic about the car and if you're going to be around here long...use it to post your initial questions and the ongoing restoration. _________________ John.

Past few weeks:
Fitted new rear boot for clutch and throttle cable
Put sleeve, return spring and housing on throttle cable. All were missing.
This weekend:
Put new steering damper on. Vibration greatly improved, but not yet gone. I expect tires are flat spotted or out of balance or something else. Probably will get new Coker wide white bias set...
Oh yeah. Its only distantly Ghia related, but found a '58 Goliath Tiger 1100 Coupe sitting under a tree in the next county. Ghia related, because it appears that was Borgward's direct competitor to the Ghia. Going to see what I can find out about the car....

My 74 ghia coupe is stripped and heading to the body shop tomorrow for body work and paint in Fort Pierce, FL. She's been off the road for 4 years now, and I'm itchin to get her back on the road.
Can't clean the garage until the car's out of the way! |

Ah, the Goliath... interesting car; German and front wheel drive. I must admit the engine bears some similarities to the VW despite being water cooled. Note the oil pump, valve covers, intake and exhaust port locations, distributor and oil filler locations, exhaust heat riser for manifold heat...
Looks like a cool car, but I bet it understeers like mad!

Finally pulled my girl out of storage and got her into a garage. She's been sitting with no progress since May 2010.
This year she runs again! _________________ (O= i =O) One day, lad, this car will be yours. |
