|
|
Riveted rims... bolted rims, I've heard about both, and wonder what it all means? When underneath the car, I look at the rim and see that the center of the wheel is riveted to the outer part. Two rivets fairly close together, I think 8 in total? Correct for the Zwitter? I haven't checked for date codes, just happened to be under the car tonight. I don't see any in the photo gallery.
thanks

The earliest 15-inch rims (dated 3/52) had the hubcap clips bolted on. I don't believe there are any VW wheels where the center hub is bolted to the rim; they are either riveted or welded, depending on the supplier's (Lemmerz, Kronprinz, Sudrad, VW) assembly methods. _________________ 11/1954 Type 113 (US market)

does anyone remember a thread where different manufacturers were discussed? I did some searching and through the photo gallery, but haven't found much.

I seem to recall a post (don't remember whether it was in the Split, Oval or Barndoor) forum, where somebody identified the wheel supplier by the style of date stamp on the center hub. _________________ 11/1954 Type 113 (US market)

Thanks again.... I see that Peter Schepens said:
If they are VW you can have Lemmertz or Kronprinz wheels.
If they are for beetle they are 16x 3.0 inch.
If they are for bus they are 16x 3.5 inch.
THe lemmertz wheels are most likely stamped with the logo near the wheel bolts as where you kan find also the date stamp.
If they are Kronprinz the name is stamped in the inside of the rim with also the month and year.
and quoting an earlier post by Janerick3
I have seen two identical (at different times and locations), 15-inch VW wheels dated 3/52. These were different than later 15-inchers in that the date was stamped inside a 1cm circle (Kronprinz?) and the clips were bolted on, not riveted.
Either these were a factory/aftermarket option for VWs or Porsches in 1952, or VW's suppliers were already building up inventory for the October VW facelift.
I think finding bits and pieces of info from different posts is how I'll put it all together! |
