An old man, playing the cards life has dealt him, just like he always has... he doesnt want to be a problem to others, and is doing his part to 'go on' and stay independent for as long as he can.
He's found a system thats working for the time being, and he's probably grateful for the long life God has given him. I posted previously and suggested that you invite the old gentleman out for lunch, where he could see people (young ladies) and have a change of scenery. From my experience, this would be something he would truely enjoy.
It was real nice of you take an interest |

| I just gotta bump this thread so it stays alive. I was actually talking to J8Bug, (the original poster here) tonight and we were both talking about the life this thread has had. I have thought several times about asking Mel to go to Lundes on the first Friday of the month for their air cooked cruise night. I know that his answer will be "no, thank you" but it is a sign at least that I and others are still thinking of him, even with our own busy, (and sometimes, not so busy) lives. I've said it before and I'll say it again, he's really a cool guy and has lots of stories. I have asked him if he would like to go over to Lenny's across Grand ave and have a burger but he politely declines. Who could blame him? Some 41 year old shows up at his doorstep one day and just wants to hang out and talk military and VW's. By the time I had the chance to introduce myself, he had already heard of this thread. People don't make it to his age without being even just a little bit cautious. I hope that if anybody gets a chance, you can go see him and say hi. All of us have this little car that endears us all in common. It connects us to each other and inspires people we don't even know to talk to us about them. Mel's car is our "people car" doing what it was born to do and has done to us all with our own rides: shine. |

Its turning out to be a heartfelt Arizona classic story. Ever since I started hanging out here in my new environment (the Valley) a few months ago I always get at least 1 v-dubber who brings up this veteran and his beloved bug. Pretty cool what has happened. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!! _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. Stopped by Mel's home while in the area. Boy was I shocked. His home might be falling apart but this guy was pretty damn spiffy. He is nothing like what I expected... 6ft tall, stands straight up and looks no older than 75. He told me he just turned 90 on Jan 11. Got a few good laughs out of him on some stories I had heard from another WW2 vet... He says he enjoys when guys come by to shoot the shit. In his words, " Its gets me off the couch and I enjoy it more than I would have years ago." _________________ Frank Ochoa said; "I still have my convertible bug from high school. Just spent about an hour reading this thread from start to what's now page 11. Can't tell you guys how great this makes me feel to be a VW guy. Wonder if this would make a "feel good" story for Hot VW's mag? Maybe one of their writers could do an article on the guy, take his pic for all of us curious to see what this guy looks like along side his pride VW? Just a thought in case anyone out there might have a contact with Hot VW's publication.

What a great post about a truly American individual. I have nothing but respect for this guy Mel. Not many Americans like him anymore.
God Bless Mel and all the other War Veterans! |
