Almost ready to re-install. Yep, I powder coated that fan shroud. She very pretty now......

I am missing one of the little flappy deals from the fan shroud to the heat exchanger. Such a shame to put it together without that when the rest of it is all there.... _________________ 1976 Chromium Yellow Westy - SLOW

From Ratwell's site:
"If your flaps are missing then you'll have engine overheating issues just as if you had removed the hoses and left the heat riser tubes open."
http://www.ratwell.com/technical/Heating.html
scroll down just a bit.

It seems like you could make that out of a pop can or something, pretty simple. |

Great link to the explanation of what these things do (the non-return flaps), and great links to places to find them. Since I don't run the aux blower moter, and have sealed my fresh air risers to prevent heated air from entering the engine compartment it seems like I might not "need" these non-return flaps. That being said, I am gonna make the missing one out of a beer can. I just need to decide which flavor now (Domestic, Canadian, Import?).
This site is just a great resource for this kind of stuff.
Thanks guys.
Pics of engine installed coming soon. _________________ 1976 Chromium Yellow Westy - SLOW

I love it. Reminds me of the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", by Robert Pirsig. Great read. _________________ 1978 Sage Green Westfalia

1979 carb converted.
It's about two months away from being pulled and being rebuilt.
I'll definitely post the After pictures once that's done.

Finally installed. All of the oil (OK, just the vast majority of it) stays inside of it now, which I'd say is a good thing. Now if I could just find a good aftermarket exhaust system......

Nice motors guys...
Here's my most recent build.
On the stand:
Installed:
1600 Single Port
7.6:1 compression
Web cam 86 grind, stock VW rockers
3 angle valve job, single HD springs
Stock German rods and pistons balanced to .10 gram
Solex 30 pict 3 with a 34 pict main jet & opened up acc. pump nozzle
German 009 with an igniter and Bosch blue coil
Factory dog house cooling tin...all of it.
German factory exhaust & heater boxes
Currently pushing my 71 deluxe around quite nicely...and no, I do not have a flat spot. _________________ 48% of Bus lovers are Bay and proud...

I see you have a fuel filter installed inside the engine compartment. You may want to move to above the transmission. My 1971 caught fire once. I don't want it to happen to you. Looks like you have a fuel pressure regulator. Why? Looks like another place for an accident to happen. Otherwise, good job. _________________ Licensed Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic

The fuel filter has been secured and clamped since the pics.
The factory type filter was never meant to have fuel pulled through it, it was designed to have fuel pushed through it.
Thanks for the concern and the the compliment tho
Pressure regulator was a must have.
The stock pump was putting out over 7 PSI
Way too much for any Solex needle and seat.
I've had that problem several times before with other replacement pumps.
Tried trimming the pushrod...three times...which only brought it down to a little over 5.
It's at a happy 3.25 PSI now.
This motor will probably see a set of 34 ICTs this summer after it's broken in ( and gets warmer out ) which should should allow me to enjoy all that work even more. _________________ 48% of Bus lovers are Bay and proud...

I'm seeing MexiBeetle FI on that, no? Can you share details of that installation? Thinking about the same for the Kombi. _________________ 75 R75/6
