Danny Arant drove this N/D for many years on Pikes Peak and other CHCA hill climbs.
He sold it to Kevin Koback that raced it in the CHCA in the early 90's
Kevin sold it to Vicki Keeney and she raced it at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb. (Sorry no pictures when Vicki had it.)
BUT, the good news is Donner Billingsley owns the car now and is entered in the 2012 Pikes Peak Hill Climb
All of the above pictures are of the same car. In 1982 ,30 years ago Danny took it on the all dirt road up Pikes Peak and now in 2012 , Donner will be running the Race to the Clouds, the 1st year of all pavement.
As we get closer to the race, hope to have updated pictures and details. Sure it will be a challenge to get a dirt track car to handle all pavement. Just great to see a VW legend back on Pikes Peak again
Lets wish Donner good luck ! |

1993 Gary Ediger at a CHCA hill climb event "Buffalo Peaks" in Buena Vista Colorado
This paint job was done by Tom Stack from Black Forest Colorado in the late 80's. Tom's work has been "thee" paint to get for years in our area. There was a very detailed airbrush mural on the rear wing of this car (Which was not on the car for that race)
This car still lives but it has been repainted, by far this is my favorite paint job on a Newman-Dreager race car. |

I am building a tube frame, Mendeola suspension, Porsche 930 gearbox, Subaru STi engined, Meyers Manx Signature #85 and am thinking about entering for the hell of it in the 2013 Pikes Peak. Would I have to run Unlimited? I didn't try to enter this year after they pushed the deadline and I am still building. What do you guys think?
Thanks |

| Hey Kevin, if everything works out on the build and it is finished before the 3 July Tech inspection this year, I will take it there. My theory is to get the Tech guys to let me know if they approve and maybe run some test runs. Because of 170 entries they closed entry applications at the end of Jan and I could not risk the money if I could not be finished. Next year will probably be a two day race so I would get more course runs. I am sure I will need a few before I turn up the boost. |

Randy Ruyle would be the guy to ask about questions on the rules. Here is the link to this years rule book by class

Racing Pikes Peak is one of those wow moments that will last a life time. Every driver young and old, always have that wild and crazy, smile when they talk about their time with the mountain. |

Nice piece of the puzzle. This is from the CHCA history files. Danny Arant in his N/D when he first got it. (I think). Dick Conners was an Ascot champ and I figure that is were the large number one comes from. So they added the extra ones and the hand painted name to the wing.
Anyone have contact with Dick Conners ???? |

Just got new pictures from Ken Blockhan. He raced Pikes Peak in the early 70's and many other Hill Climbs with the CHCA.
This is the only formula vee to race the PPHC. Early on it ran a 1700 cc motor and was sponsored by the local Volkswagen dealer. Later years he raced with a 2180 cc motor with a RayJay turbo running alcohol. Car was named "Road Runner".
1972
Making a formula vee meet tech requirements made for the unique looking cage. Few race tracks do you have to worry about no guard rails,1000 foot drop offs or animals jumping into the coxpit. This is Ken in 1972 just getting into the W's.
In 1976 Jerry King raced the "Road Runner" at Pikes Peak. Notice the taller decklid to keep the turbo inside and provide cooling for the 2180 cc RayJay turbo motor running on alcohol. The cage was also updated.
The great news is Ken still has this car today !!!! Thanks for the great pictures |

Hay, Ya Gordy called me friday night and somebody pointed him to that e-bay ad.
That's a picture of my shop when I was building the car, I still have that 67 in the background.
Anyhow maybe it will show up CHCA event.

Thanks for catching my flub on the photo. Any leads on where the car is or who is the lucky new owner??
Did get some info on the "Saddleback Hill Climb"
The event was a joint effort by the Foothill Four Cylinder Club and Hot VW's. Staged in Saddleback Park in Orange County California. Course was only one mile long with a slight grade but lots of turns.
Ted Trevor in his Corvair powered Mono Meyers Manx took 1st place, with Greg Murdock in a Grizzly taking second. Thrid place was Walt Trygstadt in a Corvair powered 'BUGETTA". Now that would make for a wild pit area. A Manx, Grizzly and a Bugetta !!! No clue on the rest of the field.

The Pikes Peak Hill Climb facebook page has been getting some older pictures as of late. Check them out and look in the photo area. There are 20 or more VW powered pictures plus a ton of Wells Coyotes.

The "Turbo Wile E Coyotee" Can-Am styling dune buggy from the 1971 Hill Climb. This car was built by Ken Blockhan. Ran a mid engined turbo Corvair engine. Driven by Dick Rayer who took 6th place in the then new Dune Buggy class.
Thanks to the Samba we now have pictures in color. Teeny02 you did good hooking us up with your grandpa (Ken Blockhan) who has provided these pictures. Thanks again |

Jay Stewart tearing up the dirt during 1980, ( ?) . Jay ended up wrecking this car years later running a CHCA event. He broke his neck But like any good racer after the bones mended he went back racing and still does today
The single seat FUNCO made it tough to get out of, if you ended upside down. There is only one way to get out and that is the opening in front of the driver. The tree's make it hard to exit the cars if you go off-road on Pikes Peak.
Ken Blockhan set me a DVD from an 8mm camera he used on his race car. The top picture is after his car died above tree line on Pikes Peak.He filmed the other drivers as they passed. We get a good look at the rear of his car. Ken made a mold from a friends formula vee to make this car. He does not remember what kind of formula vee it was. So far my guess is an early Autodynamics formula vee.
The bottom picture is when the car was on a trailer. Nice graphic's these would have been hand painted and the picture is from 1972.
Can someone can confirm what type of formula vee this is |

The twin's in action from 1980
Bruce Canepa
Doug Dreager
These two picture were hard to tell who was who. With Dougs help, you can see his orange and white helmet in the second picture. Bruce's was all white. How many of you guys have seen Bruce's car in his museum?
Just so you don't think I was crazy . The twins together. The only year I know that they ran the red caps was 1980, not sure if this was practice with out them or a different year. The following year Bruce went with the turbo's on the Porshce motor which the car still wears today. Dougs car is with the "JGB collection", wish I had pictures of it there now.
Porsche motor before the turbo's. GREAT looking race car don't you think |

More pictures from the Griswold Estate.
Looks like Mike went to Pikes Peak in 1972 to check out the other race cars. There was several pictures of his car on the Peak .
Gary Potter's #8 car from 1976 race
Gary had some good looking race cars. Two different Grizzly's and then the white and red Newman-Dreager.
Here is what the Grizzly Carrier looked like in California.
Nice to see some Grizzly pictures in color! More to come
Found another picture of Ken Blockhan's car from one of his sponsors ads.
That is the oil cooler on the roll bar behind the drivers head How times have changed. |
