Does any one k ow what should be the top speed of a 1986 Vw Golf Gti? My car pretty much won't go above 65mph. 70mph is pretty much pushing it. I was wondering if that's normal speed or if there might be a problem with the tranny or clutch?? Help! Any one? Crying or Very sad

I don't know what's wrong but that doesn't sound right.

Are you using 4th and 5th gears? Smile

Yeah, somethings not right. I had mine over 110 mph on a few occasions.

I know. Its weird. It goes up to 70mph max at 3100 rpm. Weird cuz it sounds like it's asking for another gear. I barely got this car not to long ago. Wanted to check the tranny fluid. Any idea where to check that?

I could step on the gas more but feels and sounds like if rpm are too high and need to change gear. I think normal would be 80-90 mph w/0 struggle!

It is a 5 speed correct? You should be able to hit 60 mph in third gear. If you are in fifth and it won't go past 70, your timing may be off. If it's a non interference motor, the timing belt could be off a tooth or the distributor could be off.

Pull the timing cover off the head, roll it to TDC and look in the hole in the transmission. The hole may have a green plug in it that needs to be removed. All of your timing marks should line up.

Also, there is this...

@ zuhaelter_82
I tried doing what you send me on the link. Does have a flap that you can raise/push up but comes back down. wont stay open. Is that suppose to happen or should it stay up?Crying or Very sad Getting ready to try the timing on it. Gonna check to see if all the timing mark are all on point. Lets see how that goes!!

I am confused by your question. Is it that your car just can't pull hard enough to go that fast or, is it wound right out and you've run out of legs to go any faster (gearing).

My 1984 GTI (all stock except exhaust) winds right out at 150-160 km/hr, that's right around 100mph....that's it.
